Excitement Builds in Starkville as Yellow Jackets Prepare to Face Meridian Wildcats

Excitement Builds in Starkville as Yellow Jackets Take on Meridian

Starkville is buzzing with anticipation as the Yellow Jackets prepare to face off against the Meridian Wildcats this Friday night. Despite a roster that has seen several new faces, the team is off to a fantastic start this fall. After finishing as the MHSAA Class 7A runners-up last season, Starkville has kicked off their campaign with two impressive victories against regional rivals, Noxubee County and West Point, both of which also competed for state championships last year.

A Strong Start

With a record of 2-0, the Yellow Jackets are looking to keep the momentum going as they host Meridian at home for the second straight week. This matchup has the potential to be a defining moment for both teams, especially since Meridian has been struggling to find their footing since their last winning season in 2016.

Coaching Insights

Head coach Chris Jones is proud of what his team has achieved so far but knows there’s always room for improvement. “We’ve played two tough opponents,” he shared. “But you can’t overlook the mistakes we’ve had, so that’s what we’re trying to do, just making sure we correct all our mistakes. I’m proud of the guys for the games they have won.” He highlighted their remarkable comeback against West Point as a moment of pride and resilience.

Meridian’s Journey

The Wildcats, currently sitting at a 1-1 record, faced a tough loss in their season opener with a 22-6 defeat against Quitman. However, they bounced back impressively, securing a 26-6 victory over Biloxi last week. Under first-year head coach Shelton Gandy, Meridian has shown signs of improvement, although they still have a long road ahead. Jones acknowledges Meridian’s past dominance, stating, “(Meridian) was a place with a great winning tradition… they were one of the powerhouses in the state of Mississippi, so we can’t take them for granted.”

Key Players to Watch

As the game approaches, all eyes will be on Starkville’s senior quarterback, Jaylen Ruffin. Stepping into the role previously held by Trey Petty, Ruffin has put together an impressive start to the season, completing 20 of 36 passes for 290 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions. But it’s not just Ruffin who’s making headlines; running back Abrayln Jenkins has been a force on the ground, racking up 254 rushing yards on 40 carries and scoring four touchdowns.

Also making significant contributions are receivers Davarrius Hairston and Jaheim Deans, who together have amassed 213 yards in receptions. Hairston has particularly shone in the defensive department, icing last week’s victory over West Point with a remarkable 99-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Defensive Strength

Starkville’s defense has also showcased impressive talent. Linebacker Zyahn Bradley leads the team with a pair of sacks and strong tackling numbers, while Shiloh Johnson-Hewitt has proven to be a pest for opposing quarterbacks. The secondary, featuring Donnelvin Jordan and Tyson Knox, has shown depth and skill, backing up a solid linebacker corps that includes Zachariah Hill.

Prepared for Anything

Jones emphasizes the importance of preparation and respect for every opponent, regardless of their recent performance or changes in coaching. “I will always tell my kids, we have to treat (every opponent) like they’re the New England Patriots and they got Tom Brady at quarterback,” he said, underscoring the mindset they need to have heading into the game. “We want to make sure to bring our A-game and be prepared for whatever.”

As kickoff approaches, the excitement in Starkville is palpable. Fans are ready to cheer on their Yellow Jackets as they aim to extend their winning streak and tackle Meridian’s challenges head-on. With determination, hard work, and a little bit of grit, the Yellow Jackets are eager to keep their roll going!
