On a delightful Wednesday, women from around the Golden Triangle gathered for a special event aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles at the Women’s Health Awareness Luncheon, hosted by MUW. The event was co-sponsored by Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, known for its commitment to community health.
This year’s luncheon shone a spotlight on “Nutrition Across the Ages”. The event typically focuses on themes that resonate strongly with women. Featuring expert speakers is a highlight, with health professionals sharing insights that aim to empower attendees to make better health choices.
The featured speaker for the day was Stephanie Markham, the Clinical Nutrition Manager at Baptist Memorial. She devoted her time to discussing essential topics such as bone and heart health. During her presentation, Stephanie pointed out many common nutrition myths that have circulated widely, often fueled by social media. “There’s so much on social media. It’s hard to know what to believe and what’s actually true,” she remarked, bringing clarity to the often-confusing world of dietary advice.
One of the key messages shared was the importance of being mindful about food choices. “I always tell my patients, ‘Do good when you can,’” she advised. It’s perfectly fine to indulge from time to time. “You’re not always going to make the best choices, but that’s okay. Can’t beat yourself up about that,” she added, offering reassurance to those striving for better health.
Among those attending was Mary Plyer, who expressed her appreciation for the event. “I learned that I eat too much and that I don’t eat the right thing, so they’ve inspired me,” she shared, highlighting the impact the luncheon had on her perspective regarding nutrition. With awareness gained, many attendees left feeling motivated to make healthier choices.
In addition to the enlightening talks, Baptist Memorial Hospital is offering free mammograms for women over 40 who do not have insurance. This initiative reflects their dedication to providing accessible healthcare options and encouraging women to prioritize their health.
The event not only served as an informational gathering but also as a community-building opportunity. Attendees were encouraged to share their thoughts and experiences, making it a collective effort towards healthier lifestyles.
The Women’s Health Awareness Luncheon was more than just a gathering; it was a step towards fostering a community focused on health and wellness. With resources available and discussions sparked, attendees are now more informed and empowered to make choices that positively impact their health.
