West Point Celebrates Veterans with Heartfelt Appreciation Service at Northside Christian Church

West Point Honors Veterans with Special Appreciation Service

In a heartwarming gathering aimed at celebrating those who have served in the military, Northside Christian Church hosted a memorable “Veterans Appreciation” service. While many communities paraded their respect for veterans, this local church took a different approach, inviting veterans to gather in a warm and welcoming atmosphere to honor their sacrifices.

Among the attendees was Robert Lee Young, a veteran who proudly served in the United States Army from 1978 to 1981. Reflecting on the day’s significance, Young expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to return home after his service. “Glad that Northside provided this program for us. It’s good to recognize veterans. A lot of them gave so much. I was blessed though. I came back whole physically,” he shared.

For Young, the day was an emotional reminder of the countless individuals who didn’t make it back. “A lot of guys that went over there with me did not come back, so coming back was a blessing for the good Lord to get me back over here,” said Young, emphasizing the profound connection he feels to his fellow servicemen.

A Dream to Serve

Another veteran, Denvil Clark, who served during the Vietnam War, shared his insights about joining the military. Unlike many peers who were drafted, Clark took the initiative to volunteer. “It was a dream, and also because I’ve seen different pictures about soldiers, and I just wanted to be able to see the world and at the same time, serve my country,” he said. For him, the experience had its challenges, but the relief of returning home was immense. “It was kind of rough at first to come from one environment in another country back home, but coming back home made it all better. I had left a lot of loved ones here,” Clark added, clearly cherishing the moments spent with family after returning.

The feelings of gratitude were palpable among those in attendance, including National Guard member, Staff Sgt. Crystal Lane. A proud West Point native, Lane was honored at the service and shared her enthusiasm for serving her community. “I’m really proud to serve my community first, and that was one of the reasons I love being in the guard because I could just stop here at my hometown,” Lane remarked, underlining the deep connection between service and community.

A Shared Meal and Memories

The gathering included a delicious meal served after the heartfelt program, allowing veterans and guests to bond over shared experiences and stories. It wasn’t just about recognizing their past; it was about creating new memories together and strengthening community ties.

Events like the one at Northside Christian Church show how vital it is to appreciate the efforts of those who have served. In a world where many often forget the sacrifices made by military personnel, this kind of recognition brings a wonderful sense of community and belonging. Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11, but in West Point, the community took it a step further, ensuring veterans feel special not just on this day, but throughout the year.

As celebrations wrapped up, attendees left the church feeling appreciated and honored, a small but meaningful reminder that their service and sacrifice will always be recognized and cherished.
