State Songwriter Steve Azar Visits Starkville Elementary to Inspire Young Minds

Students in Starkville Get a Special Visit from State Songwriter

STARKVILLE, Miss. – It was a day to remember for first graders at Sudduth Elementary as they had the unique opportunity to join in song with none other than the man behind Mississippi’s new state song, Steve Azar. Bringing a mix of enthusiasm and pride, Azar led the lively sing-along of “One Mississippi,” a tune that has captured the hearts of many since its adoption as the state song in 2022 by the Mississippi Legislature.

A Heartfelt Connection to Home

Azar, a proud Mississippi native, wasn’t just stopping by the school for a casual visit—he was on a mission to instill a sense of pride in young hearts. After spending years in the bustling music scene of Nashville, he decided to return to his roots in Mississippi. With a beaming smile, he shared, “This place is really special.” Drawing upon his experiences traveling around the world, Azar emphasized that Mississippi is unique, thanks in large part to its incredible people.

More Than Just a Song

During his visit, Azar didn’t just treat the kids to a song. He also brought along illustrator Sarah Frances Hardy, and together they shared copies of the beautifully crafted book “One Mississippi,” which they collaborated on. The book beautifully encapsulates the essence of the state, complimenting the song that has been embraced by many. The excitement was palpable as the first graders not only sang along but also received their own special keepsake.

Nurturing Local Pride

Through heartfelt words, Azar expressed his belief that experiences like this one can plant seeds of pride in children at a young age. “My hope is that as they grow up, they can defend their state and maybe stay here to make a living,” he remarked. It’s a simple yet powerful message; by celebrating their heritage and appreciating their home, these kids will carry that pride with them into adulthood.

A Whirlwind of Visits

But the fun didn’t stop at Sudduth Elementary. The singer-songwriter made an additional stop in Columbus, where he interacted with kindergartners at the Lyceum at Lee. The joy in the children’s faces echoed the sentiment of his mission: fostering a love for Mississippi by presenting them with opportunities to connect with its culture and heritage.

Connecting with the Community

Local events like this remind us of the importance of community connection. In his own inspiring way, Azar is not only keeping the spirit of Mississippi alive through music but is also encouraging the younger generation to understand and cherish the cultural richness of their state.
