Sponsor Our ArticlesThe Starkville Yellow Jackets secured a spot in the 7A quarterfinals with a thrilling 68-53 victory over DeSoto Central. Despite key player challenges, junior LaDanuel Jordan and senior David Washington led the team to success, showcasing the depth of talent within the roster. Starkville’s next challenge awaits against either Madison Central or Southaven, as anticipation builds for the upcoming playoff match.
In a nail-biting playoff showdown, the Starkville Yellow Jackets showcased their grit and determination as they took on the DeSoto Central Jaguars in the Class 7A playoffs. Fans packed the stands, and excitement filled the air as Starkville emerged victorious with a convincing score of 68-53.
As the game unfolded, some names shone brightest on the court, even when the usual stars faced unexpected challenges. TJ Warren, who had recently earned the title of Most Valuable Player in the Region 2 tournament, surprisingly did not score a single field goal during this match. Additionally, this was a tough night for center Jerwan McCarter, who also went without any points. However, this did not deter the Yellow Jackets from putting on an impressive performance.
Stepping up in a big way was junior LaDanuel Jordan, who made quite an impact off the bench. His energy and hustle were key factors in Starkville’s success as he helped drive the team’s momentum throughout the game. Fellow senior David Washington, the team’s scoring leader on the night with 27 points, showcased incredible shooting accuracy, hitting 9-of-14 shots. He certainly led by example, motivating his teammates to step up when it was most needed.
Aside from Washington, the contributions from Jaden Tate and Jordan were significant, with Tate scoring 18 points and making 8-of-11 shots, while Jordan finished strong with 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting. These performances exemplified the depth of talent on the Starkville roster, proving that the team is more than just its star players.
Despite their dominant play, Starkville found themselves in a back-and-forth battle for much of the game. DeSoto Central managed to tie the score at 28 before halftime, but Starkville entered the break with a slight lead of 31-28. The second half kicked off with a slow start; however, the Jackets quickly found their rhythm, launching a 12-3 run early on, largely thanks to Jordan’s impactful inside play.
The Jaguars didn’t go down without a fight, cutting the deficit to 47-41 as the final quarter approached, keeping the pressure on Starkville as the minutes ticked away. But Starkville’s adaptability was on full display as they switched from man-to-man defense to a zone to neutralize DeSoto Central’s offensive strategies. It was a decision that paid off, helping Starkville establish a solid defense that stifled their opponents down the stretch.
The Yellow Jackets, now standing at an impressive record of 24-7, are set to advance to the 7A quarterfinals where they will take on either Madison Central or Southaven. This much-anticipated matchup is scheduled for Wednesday evening at Mississippi Valley State, and fans are buzzing with anticipation about the team’s potential to carry this momentum forward.
The performance also held special significance for Washington, marking his final home game. His resilience, skill, and unwavering dedication left a lasting impression, reminding everyone of the spirit and heart that defines the Starkville Yellow Jackets.
As the community rallies behind the team, the next game promises to be exciting, with hopes high for continued success in the playoffs!
