Starkville Witnesses Community Engagement, Lending Major Assistance At MSU Move-In Day

As the season for returning to formal education dawns, Starkville witnessed a heartwarming display of community engagement. Notable among these events was the Mississippi State University (MSU) opening its doors for students moving into its residence halls this weekend.

Around a thousand students, driving both locally and from hundreds of miles away, journeyed to the campus, assisted by their families, to settle into their new abodes. Community volunteers, as well as MSU’s ever-efficient staff, played a crucial role in ensuring the process operated smoothly, particularly for incoming freshmen.

Community Volunteers and MSU Staff On The Ground

Upon reaching the campus, students’ first step included visiting dedicated campus helpdesks to collect their room slips. With the help of parents, staff, and volunteers, students were able to transport their belongings from their vehicles to their dorm rooms in an organized manner.

The move in and orientation process was noted for its impressive efficiency. Reflecting on the experience, one of the new students commented, “We had to go get our slips, get all the stuff out the van, throw it out on the sidewalk and carry it up inside. Then, the volunteers and mothers did the rest of it. I didn’t have any trouble especially coming inside and stuff. We never clashed with anybody; everybody was out of everybody’s way, keeping the traffic flowing to make the process easy for all.”

Experienced and Efficient Move-In Process

Last fall, the university welcomed the largest freshman class in its documented history. The legacy continued this year with the diligent efforts of the community and the university staff facilitating the moving in of a substantial number of students within a short duration. New student appreciated this efficiency, stating, “they had it set-up with times, which made the process pretty flawless despite the thousands of people moving in”.

A Dream Come True For Some

In a town as passionate about its academics as its sports, this weekend was more than just an organized and efficient move-in day for some students. Another freshman who grew up as a Mississippi State fan, said that attending MSU was his dream and attending football and baseball games grew his love for the institution. Haab stated, “Like I said, I was always so close and always a Mississippi State fan. So I was always up here for football games, baseball games, or whatever, and I just knew I wanted to come here.”

Looking to the Future

An official move-in date is scheduled for August 17. Looking ahead, students and staff are eagerly awaiting the new academic year and the opportunities it will bring for personal and communal growth. The university continues to urge for the cooperation and volunteerism of all members of the community for a smooth transition into the forthcoming academic year.
