In a thrilling turn of events, the Starkville volleyball team has clinched a playoff position for the first time in three years! This exciting milestone was achieved after decisively defeating district rival Clinton with a clean 3-0 sweep. The Jackets, now boasting an impressive record of 15-6-1, are riding high on a wave of success with three consecutive victories under their belts, including wins against Pontotoc and Tupelo just days before taking on Clinton.
This notable achievement marks the first playoff appearance for Starkville under the leadership of second-year head coach Meghan Mullane. Coach Mullane shared her enthusiasm for the team’s performance, noting that it has been great. Their district schedule is always tough each year, so it’s a feat in itself just to get through district and secure a playoff bid.
Joining the team in 2023, Mullane took over a program that had recently struggled, finishing the previous season with a 10-11 record. The coaching changes had led to some uncertainty, with Mullane being the third coach in as many years. Yet, she has managed to cultivate a sense of stability, guiding the Jackets to play their best volleyball in years. Many players were understandably hesitant when she came in, but having consistency has been important.
The Jackets’ roster is a healthy blend of seasoned players and promising underclassmen, led by a strong group of seven seniors. The Class of 2025 has weathered a fair amount of change but is finally flourishing on the court. They kicked off the season with a bang, winning 10 of their first 12 matches, including some impressive victories against formidable local rivals like New Hope and Caledonia.
Since the start of district play in late August, Starkville has shown resilience with wins over Tupelo, Clinton, and Murrah. As they look ahead, the team has three more district games to play, which presents a great opportunity to enhance their playoff seeding. There has been a lot of buy-in from the players, which is not always guaranteed, but they have been phenomenal.
As the season progresses, maintaining their current momentum is essential. Building upon the success the team has experienced is key. Now that they’ve been able to beat Tupelo and other teams they’ve historically struggled with, there is hope to develop confidence and consistency going into the playoffs.
The team’s determination and hard work have certainly paid off, as they continue to grow and evolve as a cohesive unit. The anticipation of the upcoming playoff matches is palpable, and there is eagerness to see how far the Jackets can go.
Starkville fans can be proud of their volleyball team, which is not only showing significant improvement but also proving that hard work and dedication truly make a difference. With the playoffs on the horizon, the Jackets are ready to embrace the challenge and showcase their talents on a bigger stage.
