Starkville Takes Steps for St. Jude: A Community Unites for a Cause
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Over 300 folks gathered in Starkville for the first-ever St. Jude Walk/Run. This event was about coming together for a cause close to many hearts – supporting the work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
A Community Spirit
“We are excited to have St. Jude here in Starkville today,” said Ann Johnson, the Executive Assistant for Camgian Corporation. One city coming together to support such a valuable organization for children battling serious illnesses created palpable energy in the air.
Participants enjoyed a vibrant atmosphere while navigating a scenic three-mile route through the heart of Starkville. For many, it was an excellent opportunity to get exercise and enjoy the company of family and friends. However, for others, this event held a much deeper meaning.
Personal Connections
Take Dunn, a member of the Starkville High School Cross Country team, who shared, “It is a really good cause, and I had someone at my school who had to go to St. Jude. I figured this would be a really good thing to do.” Young people stepping up to support causes that might directly affect their peers is heartwarming.
The event held even more significance for Gary Butler, the Founder and CEO of Camgian. “Our son was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago,” he reflected on the remarkable care and support that St. Jude provided during such a challenging time. “I wanted the community to see the great things that St. Jude does and expose them to the extraordinary work being done in Memphis.”
Stories of Hope
Among the participants were Garis Butler and Hannah Henson, who each had personal stories connecting them to this cause. “St. Jude means a lot to me because they saved my brother,” Garis said. “They are saving other kids’ lives too.”
Hannah added, “My stepmom lost her brother to childhood cancer, so I am out here because of him and everybody who is at St. Jude.” Their stories underline that it’s about raising support and awareness for a cause that truly makes a difference in children’s lives.
A Successful Fundraiser
The turnout was impressive in terms of fundraising. The collective efforts of participants helped raise over $23,000 for St. Jude Hospital. “Every little bit helps,” said Johnson.
A Celebration of Community
The enthusiasm generated during the St. Jude Walk/Run serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of community. Events like this spread awareness and foster connections among people united for a common cause. Each step taken on this day helped to support a brighter future for children battling cancer.
