The Downtown Martial Arts Academy in Starkville recently organized a free public self-defense clinic, aiming to emphasize the necessity of self-defense skills in day-to-day life. The clinic, which is open to individuals aged 12 and up, is part of the Academy’s regular sessions held every 2-3 months to educate the public on essential self-defense techniques.
Doug Bedsaul, a veteran martial arts instructor with nearly 25 years of teaching experience, explained the unpredictable nature of danger in various settings, highlighting the importance of learning and developing self-defense skills.
Cheryl Chambers, the assistant teacher at the clinic, emphasized the importance of teaching self-defense skills to children in light of increasing incidents of violence and bullying in schools. Chambers believes that these skills not only enhance physical capability but also improve awareness and alertness.
Through interactive sessions, professional guidance, and hands-on practice, participants learn how to react and navigate through potentially threatening situations, focusing on situational awareness, strategic thinking, and mental fortitude.
The free self-defense clinics are part of the Academy’s initiative to promote community safety. The next session is scheduled for September 7.
Feedback from participants has been positive, with many appreciating the opportunity to learn skills that could help in life-threatening situations.
Residents of Starkville are looking forward to the upcoming clinic in September to benefit from essential self-defense education in their community.
This initiative by Starkville’s Downtown Martial Arts Academy showcases how local organizations can contribute to community safety and welfare, emphasizing that self-defense skills are essential for everyone.
