Starkville School District Introduces Meal Programs for Students

Starkville, MS – The Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District, as the new academic year is in full swing, has launched a series of meal programs for students. The initiative has been designed with an understanding that several students depend on school meals for a significant part of their daily nutritional intake.

Inside the Program

Ms. Ginny Hill, SOCSD’s Child Nutrition Director, shed some light on the different components of this program. She stated, “In each of our educational institutions, we operate school breakfast and national school lunch programs, both of which are administered by the USDA. These programs also include meal pattern guidelines that we adhere to strictly. Furthermore, the USDA aids in processing lunch applications so that students can qualify to partake in our reduced-price or free meals. At a breakfast level, our program encompasses all students in the district, allowing them to eat for free.”

Enhancing Accessibility

The USDA provides an income chart that uses family size and income to ascertain eligibility. However, the Starkville district is taking it a step further, offering even more benefits. Ms. Hill added, “Nonetheless, in Starkville, we have eliminated the reduced price charge for parents and families. Thus, if your student qualifies for reduced-price meals, they will dine for free, just like our free eligible students. We incur those costs to assist parents who might be wrestling with financial limitations.”

Challenges and Approaches

Making meals nutritional and appealing to students can pose its own set of challenges. The Child Nutrition Director admitted, “We keep in mind that our primary customers, the students, have different taste palates and preferences than adults. We try to design the menu keeping their favorites in mind, like pizza. We are a part of a statewide purchasing group, and the pizza we provide is made with a whole grain crust. We also offer low sodium and low-fat toppings, which are made accessible to us by our purchasing group that helps us acquire foods that meet our meal pattern requirements.”
