There’s some buzzing news around town that could affect our lovely community, and we’ve got all the details you might want to know about. The City of Starkville is holding two public hearings soon to discuss a request that could bring some changes to our neighborhood.
A local resident is asking for a variance from the typical building setbacks that are required for properties near residential areas. This request concerns a few parcels of land located at and east of 521 South Montgomery Street. This land falls within a commercial zoning district—specifically, we’re talking about parcel numbers 101D-00-240.00, 101D-00-241.00, 101D-00-242.03, and 101D-00-242.02.
The property itself spans about 2.07 acres—that’s a pretty decent amount of space. The folks in our community might want to dig a little deeper into what this variance means and how it could impact the overall aesthetic and atmosphere of our streets.
The first hearing is taking place on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 4:00 PM. It will be held in the Community Development Department of City Hall, located on the second floor at 110 West Main Street.
The second hearing will follow shortly after, on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 5:30 PM. This one will be hosted by the Mayor and the Board of Aldermen in the Courtroom of City Hall on the first floor.
If you have thoughts, concerns, or support regarding the request, this is an opportunity to engage with the community and share your thoughts on what changes you’d like to see in Starkville.
For those wanting to read up on the details before the meetings, copies of the request are available at City Hall in the Community Development Department during normal business hours.
For more information or specific queries, reach out to our City Planner or the Assistant City Planner. They are there to help navigate through any questions about the hearings and the variance request itself.
Change is in the air, Starkville! Whether you’re for or against the requested variance, your voice counts. Attending one or both of the hearings will help you stay informed and play a part in the community’s development.
