Starkville Police Department Enhances Safety Measures in Cotton District for Larger Crowds

Starkville, Mississippi – With the return of student life at Mississippi State University and the surge in nightlife in the Cotton District, Starkville Police Department (SPD) has been implementing new safety procedures, focusing on adopting a Safety Station and Rideshare Pickup and Dropoff system.

Safety First

With areas along University Drive in operation from 10 p.m. until the clearing of the area is concluded, SPD is leaving no stone unturned. Starkville Police Chief Mark Ballard expressed the need for a robust police presence in entertainment areas, with safety points serving as essential elements, especially during the later hours.

“The safety points for pickup and dropoff are particularly important for those traveling at night, including students, women, and those unfamiliar with the area. It provides them a safe and secure platform to continue to their locations, balancing entertainment and safety,” Chief Ballard explained.

Intelligent Use of Technology

In addition to increasing police presence and enforcing safety measures, advanced technology like surveillance cameras is being deployed to monitor the area effectively. Chief Ballard highlighted the irrefutable benefits of these advanced cameras as witnesses since they provide an accurate description of incidents, continuously working round the clock regardless of any external factors.

Accounting for the Younger Residents

The safety station is designed to ensure the best interests of the younger and adult population in mind with a dedicated area for students to secure an Uber or Lyft ride home. Chief Ballard reassured, “If they come to the safety checkpoint, they don’t have to worry about being arrested. We’ll make sure they get home safely.”

Prevention Before Cure

The key to having fun and staying safe is planning and maturity according to Chief Ballard. “We strongly recommend utilizing our bus system, Lyft, and Uber, and local taxis. Most importantly, plan! With the venues available, there is no need for drinking and driving,” he further stated.

Chief Ballard encourages individuals to take advantage of the safety and rideshare system, a proactive measure to keep the Cotton District both safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Long-Term Vision

Bearing testimony to the efficacy of the measures, this is the second year where the safety and rideshare system has been a crucial part of the district’s nightlife safety strategy.

The SPD is committed to constantly reviewing and updating the safety procedures to ensure that Cotton District remains safe for students, locals, and visitors and continue the rich tradition of vibrant nightlife in the area.
