Hey there, Starkville residents! Big news is coming your way! The city has officially launched a brand new 10-year recreation plan aimed at improving our local parks and recreational facilities. This initiative is all about enhancing what makes Starkville a wonderful place to live, play, and grow.

A Team Effort for Better Parks

Developed in close partnership with Sports Facilities Companies (SFC), the contractor overseeing Starkville’s parks system, this plan builds on the success of our previous recreation efforts from 2016. Remember the excitement of seeing Cornerstone Park come to life? Plus, improvements at J.L. King Park, Needmore Community Center, and McKee Park have brought new life to our community spaces! Now, it’s time to take it up a notch!

What makes this new plan different? Well, it’s all about YOU, the community! Instead of just creating a document that gathers dust, the city is committing to incorporating your ideas and feedback every step of the way. Mayor Lynn Spruill has emphasized that community involvement is key to understanding the recreational needs of our diverse population.

What’s in Store?

This extensive study will unfold in four exciting phases, each heavily focused on community feedback. The first phase features a community survey available on the Starkville Parks and Recreation Facebook page. This survey seeks your insights on how you’re currently using parks, what programs you love, and what amenities you dream of seeing in the future. Whether it’s a new playground, fitness classes, or something else, your thoughts matter!

Taking a Closer Look

Once the surveys are in, it’s time for phase two, where the SFC team will conduct site visits to evaluate existing parks and recreational venues. After the visits, they will gather even more feedback from the community. There’s an open house forum set for Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Travis Outlaw Center at Starkville Sportsplex. This is a fantastic opportunity for residents to engage directly with parks staff and share their ideas face-to-face!

Learning from Others

As we move into phase three, the focus will shift to surrounding communities. Here, the team will analyze parks and recreation systems in comparable areas to spot best practices and innovative solutions. The idea is to learn what’s working well elsewhere and how we can bring that success to Starkville!
