Excitement was in the air as community members gathered to celebrate the grand opening of a brand-new community center in Needmore, a historic neighborhood in Starkville. “Very proud to be from Needmore. Very proud of it,” shared George Tutton, reflecting the overwhelming pride felt by many during this special event.
As residents like Bettie Hairston-Holmes rejoiced, she expressed her amazement at how this new development has transformed their beloved community. “Never in my life did I think anything like this would be in Starkville, in Needmore. This is beautiful,” said a visibly emotional Hairston-Holmes, who returned to her hometown to mark this milestone.
The new center came to life after the previous structure was demolished, making way for something truly remarkable. Starkville Mayor Lynn Spruill emphasized the significance of this opening, stating, “This is part of our renewal for our parks. We tore down a very old building that wasn’t in good shape, and we’ve put up a brand-new building to serve the community in ways that the old one did not.”
Needmore holds a special place in the heart of Starkville, being one of the earliest African-American neighborhoods in the city. Helen Taylor recounted the drastic changes that have taken place over the years. “It has changed from a dirt road, dirt road in front of my house, up and down these streets, to an almost big metropolis,” she reflected proudly.
For many like Hairston-Holmes, this new center is more than just a building; it is a refreshing symbol of progress in the community. “This is my home. This is part of my community where I was born. And this is so nice,” she added, highlighting the emotional connection residents have with their roots.
The new community center boasts several features aimed at enhancing community engagement, including a beautiful mural that pays homage to the rich history of Needmore. This artwork serves as a reminder of the neighborhood’s legacy and the stories that have shaped it. Additionally, the center is equipped with a basketball court, providing a space for sports and recreation, and is available for rent for various events.
The grand opening event was a fantastic way for the community to come together and celebrate their shared heritage while looking forward to new possibilities. The revitalization of this space is a testament to the community’s resilience and dedication to preserving their identity while embracing growth.
As the community celebrates this new chapter for Needmore, it’s clear the community center will play a vital role in bringing residents together. Whether it’s hosting events, providing recreational activities, or simply fostering a sense of belonging, this center is set to be a cherished addition to Starkville.
This new community focal point signifies a commitment to nurturing relationships and celebrating the vibrant tapestry of life in Needmore. The new community center marks a promising start for future gatherings, events, and shared memories, uniting old friends and welcoming newcomers into the fold. Here’s to a bright future filled with connection, celebration, and community spirit in Starkville!
