Main Street Redesign Project in Starkville Unveils Pedestrian-Friendly Plans

Starkville’s Main Street from Lafayette Street intersection to City Hall is due for an exciting and much-needed redesign. The redesigned plan aims to make this central part of the city more pedestrian-friendly, enhancing the overall downtown experience for locals and visitors.

About the Redesign Project

Pedestrian-friendly changes to Main Street have been in the works for some time. The Main Street Master Plan entails expanding sidewalks in front of Main Street businesses, removing the right turn lane on Montgomery Street, and adding trees and string lights above the road. New parking arrangements will also be introduced to accommodate the enlarged sidewalks. The changes will not only streamline pedestrian traffic but also encourage more people to visit downtown.

The project will be realized in two phases. The first phase extends from City Hall to Jackson Street, including the Montgomery Street intersection. The implementation of the second phase, spanning Jackson Street to Montgomery Street, will be dependent on available funding.

Funding for the Redesign

A total of approximately $9.5 million has been allocated for the project, comprising both cash and committed funds. Various sources, including state legislature appropriations, the Oktibbeha County Economic Development Authority, a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant, and the Main Street Association, have contributed to the funding. Additional sources are being sought for the second phase of the project.

Project Timeline

The Main Street redesign is at an exciting moment, with plans for Phase 1 of the project nearly complete. Construction is set to begin early next year and is anticipated to last about a year and a half.

Parking and Other Preparatory Works

Concerns over parking space losses have been addressed, with minimal spaces estimated to be affected during the first phase of the project. Preparatory works, including upgrades to water and sewer lines, have already been completed. The project underscores the city’s commitment to creating a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly environment in downtown Starkville.
