Starkville: Celebrating a Local Legend with a Heart
In the heart of Starkville, the Washington Street Bridge stands as an unlikely local legend. Rising only nine feet, this bridge has a reputation that towers over its actual height. Every year, drivers underestimate it, despite the clear warning signs. They attempt to pass under the bridge, only to be met with frustrating thuds, causing delays and a chuckle or two among the local populace. The bridge’s knack for snagging unsuspecting trucks has become a humorous spectacle, so much so that it even has its own account on X, where tales of its “victories” are shared.
A Spark of Inspiration
For a financial advisor in the community, the enduring fame of this “undefeated” bridge inspired a brilliant idea for fundraising. After a friend jokingly suggested selling T-shirts to commemorate the bridge’s impressive “record,” this idea was taken to heart. A fun way to honor the bridge while also giving back to the community was envisioned.
Working with local artist Vicki Burnett, who designed the shirt, and Marc Anthony from University Screenprint, the concept was brought to life. The shirts boldly declare “Undefeated Since 1875,” a nod to the bridge’s long-standing role in the area since the arrival of the railroad nearly 150 years ago.
A Bridge to Community Support
“This bridge has always been a part of Starkville’s story,” one local shared. “Most of us have seen or heard about it being struck, especially at the start and end of each school semester. It’s become almost like a rite of passage for anyone living here long enough.” With the shirts being sold as part of a fundraiser for Starkville Strong’s Second Servings initiative, which focuses on providing meals for those in need, there was a determination to make a difference.
In the spirit of community support, a pledge was made to match the first $2,500 in shirt sales, designed to inspire early buyers and increase the campaign’s impact. The T-shirts can be pre-ordered until November 15, with another order period opening on November 16 and running through December 15. This approach allows for timely printing and fulfillment without keeping customers waiting too long.
Community Pride and Purpose
For those who prefer it, orders can also be placed by phone by calling University Screenprint directly at 662-324-8277. The funds raised from these t-shirt sales will directly help Starkville Strong provide meals to residents during the holiday season, a time when food insecurity can often become a pressing issue.
Starkville Strong relies entirely on volunteer support, meaning every contribution goes directly toward helping those in need. “This project wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of University Screenprint and the folks at Starkville Strong,” it was explained. “The real work comes from those helping run the store, design the shirts, and ensure orders are fulfilled. Everyone involved has deep ties to this community, and that’s what makes this so special.”
The Design that Captures the Essence
The T-shirt design, created collaboratively by Burnett and the graphic team at University Screenprint, perfectly encapsulates the bridge’s notoriety for its height challenges. The staff at University Screenprint made sure the design looked fantastic on fabric, generating excitement among locals before they were even available for purchase.
The hope is that the shirts will serve not only as a humorous keepsake but also as a vibrant symbol of community pride. “We all have stories about this bridge,” it was reflected. “Whether you’ve driven under it a thousand times or watched a truck get stuck, it’s part of our shared experience. This shirt is a way to turn that experience into something that can truly help our neighbors in need.”
