Starkville’s Dance Free Project Brings Joy to Local Kids
In Starkville, Mississippi, a heartwarming initiative is taking shape thanks to a passionate dancer and senior at Starkville High School. For the past six years, she has immersed herself in the art of dance with the Apex Dance Company, but her love for movement extends far beyond the stage. She has recently launched the Dance Free Project, a program designed to offer free dance lessons to local children who attend the after-school program at the JL King Center.
A Spark of Inspiration
The journey with the JL King Center began during a school community service project, where volunteering revealed the potential to connect dance skills with community service. The kids were so enthusiastic and eager to learn. After spending time with them, the determination to provide more opportunities for them to explore dance emerged. This idea blossomed over the summer when she tested the waters by teaching dance during the center’s summer camps. The kids really loved it, prompting the transition of her summer project into a full-blown year-round program.
Growing Together
Currently, the Dance Free Project has around 60 children from the JL King Center’s after-school program participating. A dedicated team of 10 volunteers, comprising fellow dancers from Apex and friends from Starkville Academy and both the cheer and dance teams at Starkville High School, joins in every Wednesday for an hour, creating a vibrant atmosphere where children can learn and have fun.
A Mix of Learning and Fun
The dance lessons incorporate a delightful blend of short choreographed routines, engaging dance games, and essential jazz techniques. This fusion not only keeps the kids active but also encourages them to explore their creativity. The hope is that through this program, the children will find something they are passionate about, whether it’s dance, art, or some other creative pursuit.
A Commitment to Giving Back
For now, the Dance Free Project is exclusively available to children enrolled in the JL King Center’s after-school program, and it’s absolutely free! The initiative shines a light on a heartfelt desire to give back to the community, stemming from the joy that dance has brought into her life.
JL King Center: A Community Cornerstone
The JL King Center has been a vital resource for the Starkville and Oktibbeha County communities for over 50 years. It provides a wealth of educational opportunities through various after-school programs, which emphasize not only academic growth for youth but also crucial adult courses focusing on financial fitness, employability skills, and enhancing personal savings.
The Dance Free Project is a beautiful representation of how one person’s passion can make a significant impact on the lives of many. By sharing a love for dance with the children of Starkville, it not only nurtures their physical abilities but also encourages them to discover their own passions in a supportive and creative environment.
