This news came out on Tuesday and has left many eager to see how Hopson’s extensive coaching background will transform the athletics programs at the school.
A Remarkable Coaching Journey
For those unfamiliar with Hopson’s impressive resume, let’s take a stroll down memory lane. Before landing this new role, he was at the University of South Alabama, where he served as the cornerbacks coach. His coaching journey has certainly been nothing short of impressive. Jay has had not one but two separate stints as a head coach, the first at Alcorn State University and the second at the University of Southern Mississippi.
During his time at Alcorn State, he led the football team to an incredible two SWAC Championships within four years. What a testament to his leadership and strategic skills! When he took the helm at Southern Miss, Hopson finished with a solid record of 28 wins and 23 losses over four seasons. That’s right, he managed to steer the team through four winning seasons!
Memorable Victories and Achievements
One standout moment during his tenure at Southern Miss was leading the team to a memorable victory against Kentucky, an SEC opponent. This win was particularly notable, as it marked Southern Miss’ first triumph over an SEC school since the year 2000! Not only did his team achieve this stunning win, but his second year also ended with eight wins and a much-deserved bowl game invitation.
Hopson’s achievements didn’t stop there. Under his diligent guidance, the team returned to postseason play for the third time in four years. He didn’t just inspire wins; he also developed players. In fact, during his time at Southern Miss, he coached an impressive total of 11 first team Conference USA selections and mentored four players who went on to be drafted into the NFL!
A Diverse Coaching Background
Before hopping to head coaching roles, Hopson had quite the diverse experience as a defensive coordinator at Memphis, and even was a linebackers coach at Michigan. His journey at Southern Miss began as an assistant coach for defensive backs from 2001-2003 and later resumed in 2005-2007 focusing on linebackers and serving as the defensive coordinator. It’s noteworthy that his defensive squads frequently led Conference USA in scoring defense, showcasing his exceptional skills in defense strategies.
His experience doesn’t end there! In 2004, he was the defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Mississippi. Not to forget, he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at well-respected institutions such as Florida, LSU, and Tulane. He was even part of the Marshall Herd’s coaching staff that celebrated winning the 1996 NCAA I-AA National Championship.
Educational Background and Personal Life
Hopson holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ole Miss and a master’s in health from Delta State. Off the field, he enjoys a fulfilling family life with his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters, Hyde and Hannah. It’s clear that his passion for football is matched by his love for his family.
