Starkville Faces Challenges in Fire Department Recruitment and Retention

STARKVILLE, Miss. – In the heart of Starkville, the local fire department is grappling with a challenge that many law enforcement and emergency service agencies are facing today: finding and keeping good people. This pressing issue was brought to light during a recent meeting with community and business leaders, led by Starkville Fire Chief Charles Yarbrough.

While Chief Yarbrough expressed pride in the well-trained and well-equipped team he leads, he candidly noted a troubling trend. “We have a great department here. We’re very well trained. We have nice equipment, some of the best equipment in the state, some of the best trucks,” he said. However, the financial aspect isn’t quite where it needs to be. “But, the money is not there right now,” he added. This monetary gap is leading many talented firefighters to seek higher paying positions at other agencies, leaving Starkville Fire Department with fewer hands on deck.

A Shift in Applicant Numbers

Chief Yarbrough highlighted a significant shift in the applicant landscape. In previous years, there were more than 30 applicants vying for about four or five positions. Fast forward to today, and there are often more vacancies than candidates willing to fill them. This decline in applicants not only poses challenges for staffing but also raises concerns about the overall safety and response capabilities of the department.

“I know the board is working on that, so kudos to them on working hard. That’s up where we need to be; but right now, we’re not there,” he said. This acknowledgment reflects a broader issue many local fire departments are experiencing, where the competitive nature of pay continues to push potential hires toward neighboring departments that can offer better salaries.

A Busy Year for the Fire Department

This year has been a particularly active one for the Starkville Fire Department. Chief Yarbrough shared that they have already battled 37 structure fires in 2023, which is a notable uptick compared to the totals for the previous year. Just to put things in perspective, this current number exceeds the total of structure fires fought in all of 2022 by a substantial margin of ten fires.

This significant increase in call volume only heightens the need for adequate staffing and resources within the fire department. The ability to respond quickly and effectively during such busy times is critical, and an undersized team can affect their capacity to do so.

Looking Ahead

As Chief Yarbrough and his department navigate these challenges, there is a shared hope that improvements will be made in terms of pay and recruitment strategies. A well-funded and staffed fire department is vital not just for the safety of Starkville’s residents but also for the larger community’s morale and well-being.

“We’re actually losing good people to other departments because we’re not paying what we need to be paying,” Yarbrough lamented. As the need for qualified firefighters grows, it’s essential for the community to support initiatives that could bolster the department’s recruitment efforts and ensure it remains a top choice for job seekers.

For the residents of Starkville, the hope is that solutions will come soon, ensuring that the community remains safe, especially during this busier-than-usual fire season. Just like any other town, Starkville deserves a fire department that is not only well-equipped but also well-staffed with individuals who are committed to serving the community.
