Starkville is buzzing with excitement as the community prepares to celebrate the second anniversary of the installation of the Cross of Christ. This impressive structure, which proudly stands at the intersection of Hwy 25 South and Longview Road, serves as a beacon of hope for many. The Cross was raised after a remarkable journey that began in 2020, thanks to the generosity of the Ronnie Massey family who donated the land.
It all started with a simple but powerful idea: to create a local 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting a sense of community through faith. The visionary Board of Directors behind this initiative took their time finding the perfect spot for the Cross. Over a period of two years and careful evaluation of around 40 properties—primarily located along the Hwy 82 and Hwy 25 bypasses—they eventually settled on a prime piece of land generously given by the Massey family.
Once the location was secured, the real work began. Fundraising efforts kicked into high gear, and the response from the community was tremendous. Support poured in from individuals, local churches, Sunday school classes, various clubs, and organizations. A dedicated Facebook page and a website were launched, providing a platform for people to contribute and stay informed about the project’s progress.
Fast forward to the spring and summer of 2022—everyone was eager to see the dream come to life. Local contractors worked tirelessly to prepare the site, leveling the ground for what would soon become a significant landmark. A robust foundation was dug, measuring 16 feet square and 17 feet deep, and it was designed to host a pipe that measures an impressive 66 inches in diameter. Made from half-inch thick steel and secured in a solid base of 190 yards of concrete, it was clear this structure was being built to last.
On that unforgettable day in September, a 90-ton crane from Meridian was on-site, ready to lift the completed Cross into place. In front of approximately 500 onlookers, the moment was nothing short of spectacular. The total cost for this initial phase of the project was around $248,000, but the community spirit surrounding it was priceless.
With the Cross successfully raised, the work didn’t stop there. Further enhancements to the site transformed it into a welcoming and inspiring space. The area now features a 60-by-60-foot concrete apron, paved walkways, and a charming pavilion to host gatherings. A local electrical contractor even installed lighting to ensure the Cross shines brightly at night. To further beautify the site, stonework was added, paving for the parking lot was completed, and an additional 60 landscape plants were introduced based on a professional landscaping plan.
Additionally, a sign was erected, complete with a donation box, literature about the Cross, and free Gideon New Testaments to share the message of hope. The total cost for these invaluable improvements was approximately $98,000, all funded by the generous donations of community members with no Board member receiving any payment for their efforts.
As Starkville gears up for this special anniversary celebration, it is heartwarming to reflect on how a simple idea blossomed into a widespread community project. The Cross of Christ stands not only as a symbol of faith but as a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together for a common cause.
