STARKVILLE — The atmosphere at Starkville High was electric on Tuesday night as the Yellow Jackets soared to victory against the Murrah basketball teams, marking a thrilling rebound from their recent losses. The girls kicked off the evening with an impressive score of 63-37, while the boys followed suit, dominating their game with a score of 67-32.
Girls’ Team Hits Reset Button
The Jacket girls, now boasting a record of 8-5 this season, stepped onto the court with a new mindset, determined to start their district play on a high note. The team held a meeting to clear the air and refocus their goals. It seems those discussions paid off, as the girls stormed the court with newfound energy. “I think they responded well to that,” one player noted. “We had a couple of good days of practice, and tonight I thought we played pretty hard.”
Dominance on Defense
From the get-go, the Jackets displayed their defensive prowess, not allowing a field goal until midway through the second quarter and limiting Murrah to only 10 points in the first half. This stellar defense was complemented by a balanced offensive showing, as Zariyah Edwards led the team with 17 points, supported by contributions from 11 teammates who also made it onto the scoreboard. The effort was commendable, highlighting the potential for continued growth.
Boys’ Team Dazzles the Crowd
Meanwhile, the boys’ team also found success, improving their record to 10-3 with their own district win. The night was filled with excitement as players showcased their athleticism, featuring several thrilling dunks and alley-oops that delighted the crowd. TJ Warren led the charge with 11 points, followed closely by Sanchez Brooks with 10, while Jaden Tate and Kobe Hendrix pitched in with 9 each. In total, nine Jackets found their way onto the score sheet, highlighting the teamwork and depth of the squad.
Focusing on Improvement
Head Coach Anthony Carlyle acknowledged the rebuilding phase of Murrah but emphasized the need for his team to focus on themselves. “We told the guys to get out of there injury-free and wanted to work on some things to improve on,” Carlyle mentioned. The boys’ team, fresh off a narrow overtime loss to Huffman (49-46) just days earlier, were eager to demonstrate their resilience. “I think they did well. Each opportunity we get a chance to perform, the better we can work on our chemistry and playing together as a team,” Carlyle added.
