Upcoming challenges await as they aim for successful playoff runs.
In the charming city of Starkville, basketball fever is in the air! Both the boys and girls basketball teams, full of determination and skill, have been turning heads this season with stellar performances that are worth celebrating. With first-year coaches at the helm, the teams are showcasing impressive teamwork and a drive to win that has fans on the edge of their seats.
The Starkville boys’ basketball team, currently boasting an outstanding 23-7 overall record, has been stealing the spotlight lately. Their recent string of victories has marked a fantastic finish to the regular season. They kicked things off by narrowly defeating Madison Central with a final score of 52-48, followed by a solid win against Tupelo, where they outscored their opponents 72-62.
The momentum didn’t stop there! At the Class 7A, Region 2 Tournament, the Jackets continued their winning ways, taking down the Golden Wave for the second time in a row, this time with a score of 42-31. The team capped off their remarkable run by claiming the championship title against Germantown, triumphing with a score of 52-38.
Under the guidance of Coach Anthony Carlyle, the boys have demonstrated a significant improvement in their game. Carlyle is thrilled with how well the team has meshed together, highlighting their defined style of play and emphasizing the importance of teamwork. With effective defense that has allowed them to restrict their opponents to over 50 points only once this season, the Jackets have shown what a united front can achieve on the court.
Meanwhile, the Starkville girls’ team is not to be overlooked, as they are also on an exciting journey. Coached by Matt Willbanks, the girls are rising to the occasion with a commendable record of 9-5. Their recent performance against Olive Branch was sensational, with the team cruising to a celebratory 75-43 victory. This win is a breath of fresh air after suffering a tough loss to Choctaw Central.
What’s been particularly notable is how the girls responded positively after a team meeting, showcasing their resilience and unity as they work to fine-tune their skills and strategies. Coach Willbanks, who took charge from the former state champion coach Kristie Williams, is steadily implementing his own style and vision for the program as the season progresses.
As the regular season heads toward its climax, the Starkville girls have non-district tournament games lined up against Hancock, DeSoto Central, and Terry – all critical matchups that will serve to bolster their confidence and readiness for the bigger challenges ahead.
On the boys’ side, they are gearing up for an exciting upcoming game against Oxford (Ala.) in Gulfport as they prepare to dive into the new year with a winning mindset and a commitment to excellence. The buzz around town is palpable, and everyone supports their teams as they aim for the ultimate goal: a successful playoff run.
With both teams showing such impressive talent, teamwork, and determination under their new coaches, Starkville fans are sure to have plenty of thrilling games to look forward to. As the Jackets continue to build on their successes, there’s no doubt that they are laying the groundwork for a bright future in Starkville basketball.
