With 28 years of experience, Lark has led the White House Studio to over 70 national awards, nurturing talents like Rayven Davis and Sachi Clay. His efforts focus on overcoming challenges and fostering pride in Mississippi’s cultural heritage, shaping students into confident artists. As Starkville’s artistic community flourishes under his mentorship, Lark envisions a free after-school program to extend opportunities for budding artists.
The vibrant city of Starkville has seen a transformative impact on its young artists, all thanks to the dedicated efforts of Andrew Lark, a visual arts teacher with a heart for creativity. With 28 years of experience under his belt, Lark has been shaping the minds of future artists at Starkville High School (SHS) since 1997. His passion isn’t just about teaching art; it’s about inspiring his students to dream big and aim high.
At the heart of Lark’s artistic vision is the White House Studio at SHS. This remarkable space serves as a creative hub, offering students the chance to delve into a variety of artistic mediums. From film photography to fashion design, sketching, and even instrument building, the studio is alive with creativity. Lark’s goal is to empower his students and help them achieve national recognition in the arts, paving the way for scholarships that can enhance their college prospects.
Raised in Clarksdale, Lark understands first-hand the challenges faced by young artists—especially those growing up in a Black environment where artistic talents may struggle for recognition. He emphasizes the importance of instilling pride in Mississippi’s rich cultural heritage and encourages his students to embrace their unique potential. Through his teachings, Lark fosters an environment that shines with positivity, focusing on achievements rather than setbacks.
Under Lark’s mentorship, the White House Studio has garnered an eye-popping over 70 national awards and even some international accolades. Lark is known for entering his students into art competitions, and this strategy has paid off beautifully. For an impressive 12 years, students have won Overall Best of Show awards at the national Congressional Art Competition, showcasing their artwork in the prestigious U.S. Capitol.
Notably, one of Lark’s star students, Rayven Davis, recently clinched the Overall Best of Show in Mississippi’s 3rd Congressional District Art Competition. Her stunning self-portrait is now headed for display in the halls of the U.S. Capitol, a honor that speaks volumes of Lark’s guidance. Plus, SHS brought home four winning pieces from the same competition, illustrating just how talented these kids really are!
Another bright talent, freshman Sachi Clay, shone brightly as well by securing first place in two categories—Drawing and Photography—at the same competition. These accomplishments cut across a variety of artistic forms, highlighting the diverse skills that Lark encourages in his students. His dedication extends beyond just the basics of art; he encourages collaboration and actively seeks resources from various contacts, ensuring his students have what they need to succeed.
Many of Lark’s students continue to take their passion for the arts to high-profile colleges like the Savannah College of Art and Design, University of Columbia, and Harvard University. This is a testament to Lark’s commitment to their growth, not just in art, but in fostering valuable life skills like resilience and a love for lifelong learning.
Lark dreams of reaching even more students by launching a free after-school program tailored for middle and high schoolers in the region. This initiative aims to create opportunities for budding artists far and wide, emphasizing inclusivity and the transformative power of art.
Andrew Lark’s influence has been recognized through multiple awards in teaching. His accolades include Teacher of the Year at district, regional, and state levels, plus being honored as a member of the Starkville Area Education Hall of Fame. With a heart that beats for education, he has truly made an indelible mark on the lives of his students, preparing them not just for art, but for the world.
As Starkville bursts with creativity thanks to Lark’s guidance, the future looks bright for the young artists of our community. With their talent and Lark’s encouragement, who knows how far they will go?
