News Summary

The Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District is introducing the Jacket Thrive Intersession, providing tailored learning experiences to help students catch up academically. With a focus on individualized instruction and credit recovery, the program also features dynamic activities and community support with local organizations. Registration opens on February 18, offering innovative solutions for student success and engagement.

Starkville Initiates Exciting Learning Opportunities with Jacket Thrive Intersession

In the cozy town of Starkville, excitement is brewing as the Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District (SOCSD) rolls out its fantastic Accelerated Learning and Enrichment Camps during the much-anticipated Jacket Thrive Intersession. This unique initiative is designed to give students the help they need to succeed academically, and it’s making waves in the community!

Tailored Learning Experience

The main focus of the Jacket Thrive Intersession is to meet students exactly where they are in their educational journey. By offering individualized instruction, the program aims to support student growth in a way that fits each child’s unique needs. It’s not just about learning; it’s about catching up on key skills, relearning essential concepts, and providing much-needed reinforcement for those who might be struggling.

Strategic Academic Interventions

This innovative program is part of a non-traditional academic calendar, featuring optional learning experiences in both the fall and spring semesters. What makes this approach so effective is that it allows for real-time academic intervention. Teachers can address learning deficiencies right away instead of waiting until the end of the school year. This proactive strategy really makes a difference in student success!

For junior high and high school students, the focus is on credit recovery and catching up on assignments, ensuring they’re ready to tackle the next set of challenges. Meanwhile, elementary school students work on boosting their math and reading skills, benefiting from the small group instruction where they receive more one-on-one time with teachers. This type of instruction fosters better engagement and helps students thrive.

Dynamic and Engaging Curriculum

The curriculum used during the Intersession is anything but dull! Attention is given to sensory learning and creative engagement through exciting activities such as interactive “brain breaks”, math bingo, and innovative word problem-solving techniques. Lower elementary students dive into phonics and reading with fun exercises that involve writing, drawing, and reading aloud while incorporating kinetic activities to keep them engaged.

Community Support and Collaboration

What sets this program apart is its collaboration with local organizations. Over 80 student interns lend their hands during the Intersession, creating a supportive and enriching environment for everyone involved. Even graduate students from Mississippi State University’s School Counseling program join in to offer focused academic help for students in need.

Not to be left out, the students at Henderson Ward Stewart enjoy some fabulous art and theatre class rotations. They receive encouragement and guidance from the Golden Triangle Theatre organization alongside SOCSD Art instructor Heather Simmonds, sparking their creative potential.

Preparing for Success

One of the standout offerings is the “bootcamp” experience called “To Proficiency and Beyond,” specifically designed for 3rd graders. This program helps prepare young learners for the Mississippi 3rd Grade Reading Assessment by not only teaching them valuable test-taking skills but also providing essential social and emotional support.

Looking Ahead

As the Spring Jacket Thrive Intersession wraps up, the hopes are high that each participant feels well-prepared for a successful end to the school year and a strong start to the next academic cycle. The initiative aims to inspire students to discover their passions, identify their purpose, and unlock their full potential through these engaging and dynamic learning experiences.

Get Ready to Enroll!

If you’re interested, registration for the enrichment camps opens on February 18, and don’t worry, meals are provided for the participants. Although transportation is the responsibility of parents, there are limited spots available for the accelerated learning program, which is by invitation only for students who are struggling. The best part? Bus transportation along with meals will be provided for these students!

With all these exciting opportunities, the Starkville community is buzzing with anticipation, and it’s heartwarming to see the dedication to fostering a bright future for all students!
