Starkville Faces Rising Crime Rates Amid Recent Incidents

Starkville Sees Recent Spike in Crime Incidents

Starkville, a city known for its friendly atmosphere and vibrant community, has recently been in the news for a few alarming incidents. As the days grow short and winter settles in, the local police department has been busy addressing various crimes that have raised eyebrows among residents.

Toddler Accidentally Wounded in Gun Incident

One of the most shocking stories emerged when the Starkville Police Department responded to a report about a 2-year-old child suffering from an accidental gunshot wound. Officers were dispatched to an apartment on Louisville Street, where they found that the little one had managed to access an unsecured firearm stored in a drawer. This disturbing incident has led to serious legal repercussions for 24-year-old Nigel Cheatham, who has been charged with child deprivation of necessaries with substantial harm under Mississippi law.

Authorities acted quickly, transporting the child for medical treatment outside the area. The investigation is still active.

Road Woes: Stolen Vehicles on the Loose

But that wasn’t all the police had on their plate. On the roads of Starkville, officers from the Gluckstadt Police Department intercepted a man driving a stolen vehicle along Interstate 55 southbound. The driver, identified as Roger B. Jenkins, was promptly arrested.

Another incident involving a stolen vehicle came to light when Starkville Police arrested a 42-year-old man named Draper Manning. Manning is facing serious charges, including kidnapping, two counts of grand larceny related to motor vehicles, and petit larceny. Residents can’t help but wonder what has led to such a string of vehicle thefts.

Auto Burglaries Raise Alarm

The crime wave doesn’t end there. On top of the vehicle thefts, 31-year-old Devon Riley was also arrested, linked to a series of auto burglaries in residential areas north of Highway 182. As the community reflects on these troubling developments, many are left asking: How can we keep our homes and belongings safe?

Meanwhile, the Kosciusko Police Department has called for assistance in identifying two individuals who allegedly used multiple credit cards to rack up a staggering $3,000 worth of liquor purchases from a local store. This kind of chaos further amplifies the security concerns of residents.

Final Thoughts

The incidents in Starkville serve as a stark reminder of the challenges that can arise in any community. As winter approaches, the focus is on fostering a safer environment for friends, family, and especially children. Safety starts at home and with each other, and staying vigilant is essential.
