SPD Implements Safety Procedures in Cotton District to Manage Large Crowds
Starkville, MS – With the influx of students returning to Mississippi State University, night life in The Cotton District is once again buzzing. As the sun sets, the streets become a hub of activity, bustling with students, locals, and visitors. It is in this light, the Starkville Police Department (SPD) has resolved to implement its Safety Station and Rideshare Pickup and Dropoff system in the district.
A Proactive Take on Safety
Police Chief Mark Ballard of Starkville, has stated the areas along University Drive will be active from 10 p.m until the crowd clears out. Citing the need for enhanced safety measures in populous entertainment districts, he said, “We’ve learned from other university communities that you need safety points and a strong presence there, especially as the night advances.” He further affirmed the essence of a secure pickup and drop-off spot for people unfamiliar with the area, women, students, and nighttime travelers to ensure their safety.
As part of the safety procedure, certain roads may be closed depending on the crowd size. In addition, cameras have been installed strategically around the entertainment zones to help with crowd monitoring. Ballard advocated for the use of cameras saying, “Cameras are the best witnesses. They deliver accurate accounts of what transpired as they work round-the-clock, unaffected by intoxication or illness.“
Safety Stations for the Young
The safety station has been specifically set up with young adults in mind. It provides a designated area for students to hail an Uber or Lyft safely. Ballard wants to reassure students that their primary goal is to get everyone home safely, relinquishing any apprehensions they might have about interacting with the police.
Plan for a Good Time
Highlighting the need for individuals to plan and stay mature while enjoying their time in the district, Ballard said, “Recognize that if you’re in a situation where you’re drinking, you should not get behind the wheel. We have multiple options such as local taxis, Uber, Lyft, and our bus system that you can use instead of drinking and driving.“

This initiative by the Starkville Police Department marks the second year of the Safety Station and Rideshare Pickup and Dropoff system. Chief Ballard believes that proper planning and adequate safety measures can ensure that everyone in the district has a great time while feeling secure and protected by their local police force.
