Seventh Avenue Heritage Festival Celebrates Community and Revitalization in Columbus

Vibrant community celebration

Seventh Avenue Heritage Festival Brings the Community Together in Columbus

Columbus, Mississippi, is buzzing with excitement as the Seventh Avenue Heritage Festival kicks off. This annual event, which marks its 51st year, is not just a celebration but also an initiative to spread awareness about an area that is longing for revitalization. Mississippi State Representative, Kabir Karriem, emphasizes the purpose of the festival, saying, “It’s a party with a purpose.”

Once a thriving hub for the black community’s businesses and entertainment, Seventh Avenue holds a significant place in the heart of Columbus. Karriem recalls those early days, where local entrepreneurs worked tirelessly, pooling together their resources, “just putting their dollars and quarters together” to bring joy to children by hiring a DJ and organizing fun events.

A Journey Through Time

This year’s festival adds another layer of nostalgia as it coincides with the 36th anniversary of Helen’s Kitchen, a beloved restaurant sitting at the corner of 7th Avenue and 15th Street North. The owner, Helen Jones-Karriem, reflects on her lifelong passion for cooking. “I’ve been cooking since I was six,” she shares, describing how growing up in a large family motivated her to develop her culinary skills.

The street’s name is even a tribute to her, honoring her commitment to serving the community. “I’m just thankful, very thankful. God has been so good to me,” says Ms. Helen, who has six children of her own. Her gratitude shines through as she acknowledges the support from her friends, family, and the community.

Preserving the Legacy

With this festival, Kabir Karriem is keen on ensuring that the story of Seventh Avenue doesn’t fade into the background. He passionately advocates for educating the younger generation about the rich history and cultural significance tied to the area. “Such rich history in the area, and we need to make sure we preserve that history and let our young folk know where they come from,” he mentions. It’s clearly a mission close to his heart.

What to Expect

As the festival gears up, attendees can look forward to a variety of activities and festivities starting at 4:00 p.m.. It promises to be a vibrant gathering filled with entertainment, delicious food, and, most importantly, a sense of community. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to join in on the fun and celebrate the spirit of Columbus.

In a world that often feels disconnected, events like the Seventh Avenue Heritage Festival remind us of the importance of community, history, and coming together for a common cause.
