STARKVILLE — Thursday night was nothing short of magical for the Starkville Academy girls’ soccer team as they celebrated Senior Night with a fantastic 3-1 victory over Bayou. This win marked the Vols’ fourth consecutive triumph and gave fans a delightful reason to cheer. The excitement was palpable as the team honored seven remarkable seniors, two of whom made their mark on the scoreboard.
The atmosphere was electric as players, families, and friends gathered to honor these senior athletes who have dedicated years to the sport. Head coach beamed with pride when discussing the special group of seniors. “They’re a special group,” he mentioned, clearly moved by their journey together. “It’s a big group and they’ve played together for a long time, for both school and club. I didn’t want to say too much; I just wanted to express how much they’ve meant to me—as soccer players and as individuals.”
As the game progressed, it was clear the Vols were ready to put on a show. Just before halftime, Elizabeth Fair opened the scoring with a stunning low shot from a tricky angle that caught the Bayou goalkeeper off guard. It was the perfect way to set the tone for the second half. The seniors didn’t stop there! Sara Stokes McReynolds netted the second goal after a mishap from the opposing goalkeeper, and shortly after, Rylee Fisher saw her intended pass for Fair take a fortunate bounce and find the back of the net.
While the Colts managed to get one goal back late in the game, it was merely a small blemish on an otherwise stellar performance, especially for goalkeeper Chandler Nettles, who made several crucial saves to keep her team in the game during the first half. “It’s pretty special,” remarked McReynolds, reflecting on the celebration and the win. “I’ve played with these girls for many years, so it’s a special year, and hopefully, we can finish it out.”
This victory was particularly sweet, as the Vols had lost to Bayou in a tough match earlier in the season. McReynolds noted the feeling of revenge. “It’s definitely turned around from last time. We lost 1-0, in a sandstorm, so this is a nice win on Senior Night,” she said with a smile. Thankfully, the Vols rose to the occasion and showcased their growth as a team.
With only one game left in the regular season, the team is firmly focused on the upcoming playoffs. The players and coaching staff have set their sights on challenging for the championship title, which has been the driving force behind their hard work all season long. Coach Hampton recognized the talent within the team instantly. Having coached many of these seniors at a club level, he saw potential that would flourish with determination and teamwork.
After overcoming early struggles in the season, the Vols have unleashed their offensive potential, scoring goals with confidence. “We feel great, we’re still 100% and keeping the state championship in our sights. It’s a competitive schedule, so it’s going to be good competitive soccer. I’m confident the girls can do it,” stated the coach.
The atmosphere surrounding the Starkville Academy girls’ soccer team is one of hope and determination. The recent victories lay the groundwork for what they hope will be an amazing postseason run. As they prepare to close out regular season play, the Vols are fueled by their recent success and the spirit of their senior class. One thing’s for sure: the soccer field will be buzzing with excitement as the playoffs approach. Fingers crossed for more wins to come in Starkville!
