SOCSD Launches Innovative B.U.S. Program to Foster Positive Behavior on School Buses
Starkville – Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District (SOCSD) has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative aimed at fostering and rewarding positive behavior among students riding the bus to school. The program, known as the B.U.S. initiative, embraces an approach to behavior management called “positive behavior interventions and supports”.
B.U.S. Initiative Objectives
The B.U.S. initiative is designed to encourage and incentive students to demonstrate positive behavior on their school bus rides. This is achieved by following the program’s motto: Be responsible (B), use respect (U) and stay safe (S). The goal is to establish a safe and positive environment for all students during their commute to and from school.
The initiative will reward students for good behavior by handing out “tickets”. These tickets will give students the chance to enter a raffle held every nine weeks, where the winner will receive a cash award of $125 for their exemplary behavior.
This behavior reward system has been funded by Thomas Stewart, owner of Architectonics professional architecture firm in Starkville. Training sessions were provided to transportation staff on positive behavior management strategies to promote a respectful and safe bus environment.
Parental Support and Expectations
Parental support is crucial for the success of the B.U.S. program. Parents will be involved by reinforcing positive behavior expectations at home. The first raffle draw is scheduled to reward deserving students and continue fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and safety.
