City sanitation Employees Arrested For Stealing Municipal Garbage Bags

On August 4, 2024, Starkville city announced the arrest of three sanitation department employees who were charged with felony embezzlement for allegedly stealing city trash bags, stirring shock and concern across Lowndes County.

Details of the Alleged Theft

According to an official press release from the Starkville Police Department (SPD), the accused – Dylan Coleman, 20, from Sturgis, Douglas Erwin, 31, and Stevenson Tutton Jr., 30, both from Starkville – allegedly stole rolls of municipal garbage bags from the sanitation department. These bags, being part of the city’s annual supplies provided to residents for waste disposal, carry considerable value. SPD’s public information officer, Sgt. Brandon Lovelady, however, did not specify the volume of bag rolls that were allegedly stolen but confirmed the embezzlement had occurred in July.

The Felony Charges

In the state of Mississippi, embezzlement is deemed a serious offense and is a felony regardless of the value of the property stolen. Additionally, the theft of public resources can carry harsh penalties, reflective of the violation of public trust and order. By stealing these bags, the employees stand accused of not only misusing their positions but also of creating potential difficulties for the proper conduct of the city’s sanitation affairs.

Professional Tenure and Termination

Records provided by the city’s Human Resources Director, Navarrete Ashford, indicate that the three accused employees had varying tenures with the sanitation department; Tutton being the earliest hire in March 2023, followed by Coleman in September 2023, and Erwin being the most recent addition to the team in May 2024. Following the charges, all three were terminated from their positions on Monday, leaving the city officials and residents dismayed.

Post Arrest Release

Pending further action on their cases, Coleman and Erwin were released from the Oktibbeha County Jail after posting $5,000 bonds each. Tutton also secured release but required a $7,000 bond due to an outstanding warrant on a separate domestic violence charge.

Impact on Starkville Residents

The incident has left the community shaken, questioning the integrity of those entrusted with providing essential public services. It also underpins the importance of stringent checks and regulations within public departments and strong disciplinary actions against violations. In addition, it calls for reinforced efforts by city officials to restore public trust and ensure that such incidents do not repeat in future.

Call for Steadfast Journalism

In the face of such shocking developments, local journalism plays a crucial role in bringing forth the truth and keeping communities informed. It is through steadfast reporting that accountability can be maintained and syllabus such as these can be promptly addressed. Let this incident be a reminder of the importance of an attentive and conscientious citizenry, and the essential role news serves in our society.

As Starkville and its residents recover from these revelations, the need for a renewed commitment to integrity, discipline, and trust within the public service sector becomes even more significant.
