This weekend, Starkville is all set to lasso in some fun as the Rotary Classic Rodeo returns to the Mississippi Horse Park for its thrilling 18th year. The rodeo is not just any ordinary event; it’s a community staple that promises a weekend full of excitement for individuals and families alike. Mark your calendars for Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. for an unmissable experience!
Starkville Rotary Club’s president points out that this rodeo is all about providing high-quality family fun while funneling valuable support into local community service projects. Meaning, while you’re having the time of your life watching professionals tackle exciting challenges, you’re also helping the community thrive! Last year alone, the rodeo raised around $40,000 that helped fuel numerous projects ranging from local youth programs to the Starkville-Oktibbeha County Public Library.
Prepare for an evening filled with action! The main events kick off at 7 p.m. both nights, showcasing some competitive spirits in a variety of rodeo disciplines. Bull riding, bronc riding, bareback riding, breakaway roping, calf roping, and, let’s not forget, the ever-popular barrel racing are all on the agenda. In fact, barrel racing has been a strong focus since the rodeo’s inception in 2007, attracting over 90 skilled racers this year. Some of these competitors have even reached the finals in some of the toughest rodeo circuits!
Saturday promises additional family-oriented fun! From 5 to 6:30 p.m., kids can enjoy a delightful petting zoo and pony rides. It’s the perfect chance for little ones to get up close and personal with some furry friends before the main events kick off!
As you cheer on your favorite riders, make sure to check out the concession stands for a range of tasty treats. Feeling inspired? Swing by the merchandise booths to pick up some rodeo memorabilia! With around 3,000 attendees flocking to the rodeo each year, it’s truly a beloved local tradition that creates a sense of togetherness in the community.
Ready to stampede into the fun? Tickets go for $15 per adult when pre-purchased, and they’ll be $20 at the gate. Children 12 and under are free on Friday—what a steal! For Saturday, tickets for kids aged 4 to 12 will only cost $5. You can snag pre-purchase tickets at convenient spots like the Oktibbeha County Farmers Cooperative, Tractor Supply locations in Starkville or Columbus, and the Greater Starkville Development Partnership Office on Main Street.
The rodeo wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering support of dedicated volunteers. Around 50 volunteers assist each night to ensure that everything runs smoothly, reaffirming the community spirit that Starkville is known for. Plus, it’s important to note that this event is sanctioned by both the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association and the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association, adding an extra layer of prestige and competitiveness.
So, gather the family, grab those cowboy hats, and head on over to the Mississippi Horse Park this weekend! The Rotary Classic Rodeo is not just about watching the action; it’s about joining in a tradition that supports your community while having an absolute blast. Don’t miss out on what promises to be an unforgettable evening full of laughter, excitement, and cherished memories!
