Dartha was born on August 24, 1941, to Emmett Downs and Eloise McElroy Downs in West Point, MS. Growing up in this close-knit community, she graduated from West Point High School, where she showcased her musical talent by playing the bass drum in the school band. It was a time filled with laughter and friendships, and the memories she created would last a lifetime.
In a twist of fate, Dartha met her soulmate, John Edward (Johnny) McMurray, and the two tied the knot, embarking on a beautiful journey together. Their marriage lasted 61 wonderful years and was filled with love, support, and an unwavering commitment to family.
Building a Family
Dartha’s family was the center of her universe. She poured her heart and soul into raising her children, whom she deeply cherished. Dede (Ronnie) Pepper from Starkville, Monica Partsch from Manassas, VA, and John McMurray Jr. (Teresa) also from Starkville were not just her children but her pride and joy. Her nurturing spirit extended to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even a great-great-grandchild. Michelle, Randle, Jerry, Rosemary, Mary Kathryn, Emily, and Tori are just a few names that filled her heart with immeasurable joy.
A Passion for Shoes
One of Dartha’s enduring passions was her love for shoes, which became a defining part of her entrepreneurial spirit. In 1975, she realized her dream and opened McMurray’s Shoes on Main Street in Starkville. For the next 25 years, she would delight customers and build lasting relationships through her business. Dartha’s warm personality and keen eye for style turned her store into more than just a shopping destination; it became a beloved part of the community.
After retiring from the shoe business, Dartha transitioned into property management, demonstrating her resilience and adaptability. She eventually retired in 2017, leaving behind not only her businesses but also countless memories filled with laughter and connection.
A Loving Community
Dartha’s impact reached far beyond her family. She had a knack for connecting with people and a tendency to light up a room with her welcoming smile. Friends and family fondly remember her love for life and her guilty pleasure of enjoying a good, cold coke. Whether it was her love for horses or her appreciation for a fabulous pair of shoes, Dartha embraced life with open arms.
A Lasting Memory

She is survived by her loving sisters, Martha Carlisle and Judy Hildreth, along with her adored sisters-in-law and a plethora of nieces and nephews. Though she is predeceased by her beloved husband Johnny and her parents, Dartha leaves behind a family who holds her memory dear to their hearts.
Visitation and Remembrance
Visitation will be held at Welch Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that expressions of sympathy be made to the Oktibbeha County Humane Society, reflecting Dartha’s love and compassion for all living beings.
As Starkville feels the void left by Dartha’s passing, her spirit continues to resonate in the stories shared, the shoes worn, and the love passed down to her family. Indeed, she will never be forgotten, and her legacy will forever shine brightly in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing her.
