A shocking turn of events emerged in Oktibbeha County when Delois Farmer, the then County Administrator, was ousted from her position in a 3-2 split vote by the county’s board of supervisors. This unexpected decision came to light after a pair of lengthy executive sessions that took place instead of the budget meeting planned for the day.
The day started as any other. Supervisors made their way to the chancery courthouse prepared to discuss the budget for the upcoming year with various department heads. However, four hours later, the county found itself without an Administrator as Delois Farmer was vacated from the position.
It was District 1 Supervisor Ben Carver who opened the meeting with a call for an executive session – an indication of the altering course of events that were about to unfold.
After deliberations behind closed doors, the board made its decision. The majority of the board voted in favor of vacating the county administrator’s position with a 3-2 vote. Those voting in favor insisted they did not fire Farmer, but instead, gave her an opportunity to exit gracefully. They argued it was for the betterment of the county’s administration and the progress of their community.
However, this explanation didn’t sit well with others present. A grey area formed around whether Farmer was given an opportunity to resign or was simply ousted from her position. The discrepancy between the majority of board’s rationale and the perception of others exposed a clear divide that is unsettling to many.
While the abrupt change in administration came as a shock, the county’s affairs have not stalled or been delayed. The primary focus of the county remains balancing the upcoming fiscal year’s budget and providing necessary essential services to its residents. The department heads will continue attending planned meetings and working towards realizing the goals of the county.
No one in Oktibbeha County expected the change in the administrator position. It was an unforeseen event that happened on a normal Tuesday mirrored with usual meetings. As much as it shocked everyone, the county’s administration remains optimistic about the future.
They envision this change as an opportunity for Oktibbeha County to move forward and work towards becoming an exemplary county that other regions could look up to when it comes to administration, services, and, most importantly, unity among the board of supervisors.
Currently, the plans and the process for replacing the ousted administrator are unknown. Board supervisors have yet to provide further details on the administrator’s replacement. As the event still remains fresh, reactions, consequences, and future outcomes are yet to be seen.
However, it is clear that the hard-working and dedicated officials of Oktibbeha County will remain committed to their work of ensuring a well-managed county and the continued provision of essential services to its residents.
