91.1 The Junction: MSU Radio Boasts New Name, Sound and Voice

Celebrating its 30th year in operation, Mississippi State University’s radio station has rebranded, presenting a new name, a fresh sound and a renewed vibrance. The station, now known as 91.1 The Junction, formerly called World Class Radio, serves as the new pulse of the Golden Triangle community and brings with it a unique blend of diversity inspired by the MSU’s vibrant campus and the energetic atmosphere of The Junction on game days.

The rebranding is aimed to better reflect the station’s mission and format, specifically an Adult Album Alternative format where a variety of music genres like alternative, blues, indie rock, pop, and Americana coincide. The rebranding goes beyond mere aesthetics, integrating the spirit and values of the surrounding community.

A Convergence of Music, News, and Public Trust

Neil Price, who assumed the role of the station’s general manager in October, explained the essence of the station saying, “It’s a junction where different forms of music come together with local to international news…We are a conduit for information for the community. We’re here to support MSU and our community. It’s more than just music, it’s a public trust.”

The non-commercial station operates as a practical training center for students from various MSU colleges. Offering hands-on experience in radio operations and broadcasting, news and sports reporting, writing, and weather forecasting, the station prioritizes truly enriched learning for its participants.

Fulfilling the University’s Motto through Community Relevance

Associate Director of the Office of Public Affairs and University Television Center Director, David Garraway lauded the station’s progress and Price’s dedication towards enhancing the station’s programming. This aligns well with the university’s motto—learning, research, and service. Investing in the continued development of the station guarantees relevance in the community. Garraway noted, “We’re making long-term strategic investments to last us decades and remain a community presence in this area for the next 30 years and more.”

The Junction, covering a 70-mile listening radius around campus, now hosts the university’s new morning show: “Music and More.” The show features news, sports, weather, and extended music blocks, and runs on weekdays from 7-10 a.m. on 91.1 FM, online using the TuneIn radio app, or at the station’s website.

Accolades and Future Growth

The station, established in 1994, has bagged over 50 state and national awards. Operating within the university’s Division of Strategic Communications, it provides more than just entertainment and news but also serves as a crucial tool in fostering community relationships, enhancing student learning and steering the community towards a brighter future.
