Starkville, Mississippi – August 15, 2024
In celebration of its 30th year in operation, Mississippi State’s radio station unveils a novel identity as 91.1 The Junction, formerly known as World Class Radio. This transformation mirrors a fusion of the diversity prevalent in Mississippi State University’s campus and the vibrant energy of The Junction during game days.
With its rebranding, 91.1 The Junction represents the station’s true essence—an Adult Album Alternative format where various musical genres converge, including alternative, blues, indie rock, pop, and Americana.
The station’s new general manager, Neil Price, who assumed office in October, has played a crucial role in enhancing the station’s coverage, facilities, student engagement, experiential learning opportunities, and overall branding.
In his explanation about the station’s new image, Price stated, “It’s a junction where different forms of music come together with news coverage ranging from local to international. We aren’t just about music. We serve as a conduit for information in the community. In supporting MSU and our community, our role transcends just music; we are holders of public trust.”
The non-commercial station will continue to fulfill its mission as a learning laboratory for students across multiple disciplines on the campus, providing them with practical learning opportunities on aspects such as radio operations and broadcasting, news and sports reporting, writing, and weather forecasting.
Commending the station’s progression and Price’s efforts to enhance its programming, David Garraway, an associate director for the Office of Public Affairs and University Television Center director, spoke of their agenda for long-term investments. The goal is to create a relevant news source for the community and remain a dominant presence over the next 30 years and beyond.
Flaunting a 70-mile listening radius around the campus, The Junction now hosts a unique morning show, “Music and More,” featuring news coverage, sports, weather, and extended music blocks – all under the stewardship of Price. The show runs on weekdays from 7 to 10 a.m. and can be accessed on the radio channel at 91.1 FM, online through the TuneIn radio app, or at the station’s official website.
Since its inception in 1994, the station has achieved accolades for its exceptional programming, winning more than 50 state and national awards. Now operating within the university’s Division of Strategic Communications, The Junction foresees a thriving future in championing strategic marketing, brand fostering, news communication, design, and photography.
In supporting the work of local journalism and reinforcing its commitment to fulfill the community’s information needs, The Junction invites the public to become subscribers. Subscription funds will help the station continue to produce quality, in-depth news stories that promote critical thinking and informed decisions among its audience.
