Celebration in Starkville: MSU’s Christmas Luncheon Highlights Student Achievements and Community Spirit

Celebration in Starkville: MSU’s Charming Christmas Luncheon Shines a Light on Student Achievements

Starkville, MS – The festive spirit was alive and well at the Mill Conference Center as the Association of Retired Faculty (ARF) at Mississippi State University came together for their annual Christmas luncheon. This delightful gathering was hosted by MSU President Mark Keenum, who welcomed attendees with open arms and a heart full of cheer.

University Updates with a Holiday Twist

As everyone settled in, Keenum kicked off the festivities with a warm welcome and a thoughtful invocation. He then shared some exciting updates about the state of the university. Among the highlights were impressive statistics on academic achievements and a special spotlight on the MSU nursing program in Meridian. He also announced news regarding new buildings and renovations across campus, painting a bright picture of what’s happening at MSU.

A Special Awards Ceremony

This luncheon was also a chance to recognize outstanding students excelling in their respective fields. Each year, ARF awards four $500 scholarships to remarkable students, chosen for their dedication and excellence by their faculty members. The award presentations added extra sparkle to the event.

Meet the Award Winners

The awards ceremony was a heartfelt moment, filled with pride and joy. First up was Annie Kirkpatrick, who received The Peyton Williams Distinguished Writing Award, presented by Ted Atkinson, an associate professor of English. Annie’s achievement was met with warm applause as she accepted the award and a plaque from the Peyton Williams publication.

Next, engineering student Khaoula Kamal was presented with The Harry Simrall Award for Engineering by Robert Green, the interim dean of the Bagley College of Engineering. Khaoula’s hard work in engineering truly paid off and was celebrated by all in attendance.

Moving to the sciences, Georgia Neill, an agriculture student, was honored with The Charles Lindley Leadership in Agriculture Award, recognized by Jada Chubb, who is the director of academic relations for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Georgia’s contributions to her program stood out amongst her peers.

Finally, the architectural community was proud to see William Brotherton receive The William Giles Award for Excellence in Architecture, presented by Karen Spence, the director of the College of Architecture, Art and Design. William’s creative flair and outstanding work in architecture were acknowledged and celebrated.

A Token of Appreciation

In addition to the cash awards, each student was honored with a hand-painted cowbell, a special item that symbolizes school spirit and camaraderie, courtesy of the president’s office. This unique touch added a fun and personal flair to the awards!

Honoring the Past and Electing Future Leaders

After the awards were given, the event turned to recognize new ARF lifetime members and reflect on recently deceased members with readings of their obituaries—reminders of the strong legacy built by the faculty over the years. As the luncheon wrapped up, attendees participated in the election of officers for the upcoming year, ensuring that the ARF continues its important work.

A Growing Association

Founded in 1986 with just 73 charter members, the Association of Retired Faculty is a cherished organization that welcomes all retired MSU faculty and professional staff. Membership is affordable at $25 per year or $300 for a lifetime membership, providing ongoing opportunities to connect and give back to the MSU community.

Events like this Christmas luncheon remind everyone of the enduring connections made at Mississippi State University and the commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders.
