Columbia Buzz: Mizzou Golf Team Gears Up for Old Waverly Collegiate Championship

Excitement is in the air here in Columbia as the University of Missouri Men’s Golf Team, affectionately known as the Tigers or Mizzou, gets ready to tee off at the prestigious Old Waverly Collegiate Championship. This tournament, hosted by the fine folks at Mississippi State University, kicks off on Monday morning, April 14, 2025, bright and early at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Buckle up, because this is going to be a thrilling ride for both players and fans!

What to Expect at Old Waverly Golf Club

The championship will take place at the stunning Old Waverly Golf Club, a par-72 testing ground that stretches over a challenging 7,088 yards. So, what can spectators expect? A total of 36 holes will be played on day one, followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, also starting at 8 a.m. This is not just any event; top teams from around the country are ready to show their skills.

This year, the competition is fierce, with notable teams such as No. 3 Ole Miss, No. 15 Alabama, and No. 32 Mississippi State in the mix, along with Cincinnati, Kansas State, Memphis, Murray State, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy, ULM, and UTEP. Each team brings their A-game, but all eyes will be on Mizzou!

Tigers Roaring After Recent Success

Mizzou is coming off a fantastic performance at the Tiger Intercollegiate, where they snagged their first team title of the season. The Tigers clinched victory with an impressive eight-stroke lead over Saint Mary’s in a tournament featuring a total of 18 schools. Talk about stepping up their game!

A standout player for Mizzou has been the sensational Mattias Varjun. He didn’t just contribute to the team’s success; he outright won the individual title—the first of his collegiate career after 42 tournaments! Varjun finished four strokes ahead, showcasing his remarkable talent and determination. His stellar performance earned him the title of SEC Golfer of the Week, a title well-deserved!

All-Star Lineup Ready to Compete

In addition to Varjun, the Tigers displayed their strength with four players finishing in the top 10 at the Tiger Intercollegiate. Here’s how they ranked:

  • Mattias Varjun – 1st
  • Trent Mierl – 3rd
  • Veikka Viskari – 5th
  • Bubba Chapman – 8th

It’s important to note that this marks the first time in three years that Mizzou has had four different golfers crack the top 10 in a single tournament, a testament to the depth of talent on the team.

Looking Ahead

The Tigers have been on fire lately, averaging an impressive 281.3 stroke average over their last seven rounds. During that time, an average of three golfers have scored under par or even par. Varjun has shown remarkable improvement, consistently scoring 70 or lower. Compare that to earlier in the season when he managed that only twice in the first 17 rounds.

As we look ahead, here are the Tigers who will be representing Mizzou at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship:

  1. Veikka Viskari
  2. Virgilio Paz
  3. Trent Mierl
  4. Brock Snyder
  5. Mattias Varjun

There’s also an individual competitor, Trevor Mierl, who is ready to strut his stuff on the green!

Let’s not forget, this championship is a stepping stone as the Tigers prepare themselves for the SEC Championship, set to start the following week on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. The excitement is palpable, and we can’t wait to see what the Tigers accomplish. Go Mizzou!
