Starkville, Mississippi — The Mississippi State University (MSU) women’s tennis team kicked off their season with a bang, boasting a perfect 8-0 record after sweeping a doubleheader on February 7, 2025. This marks the team’s strongest start since the 2020-21 season, and they show no signs of slowing down!
The excitement was palpable as the MSU Bulldogs faced off against the Memphis Tigers and the Alcorn State Braves at the delightful Rula Tennis Pavilion. In the first match of the day, MSU fought hard and managed to overcome Memphis with a score of 4-2. Following that adrenaline-pumping encounter, they quickly turned their focus to Alcorn State, where they clinched a dominant 7-0 shutout.
Throughout the day, several players shone bright, showcasing their skills and determination. In the doubles matches against Memphis, Gianna Oboniye and Athina Pitta kicked things off strong, winning their match 6-3. Although one pair of Bulldogs faced a tough defeat, the team was resilient, with Jayna Clemens and Chiara Di Genova prevailing in their match 6-4, ensuring a strong start for MSU.
Singles matches were equally thrilling. Gianna Oboniye faced a tough opponent but managed to turn the tide after losing the first set, eventually winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Jayna Clemens showcased her fighting spirit, digging deep to clinch her victory with a nail-biting score of 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 against Clemence Thouard of Memphis.
After their hard-fought victory against Memphis, MSU’s team rolled confidently into their match with Alcorn State. The Bulldogs didn’t hold back, demonstrating their prowess on the court with a spectacular sweep in doubles play, where all three pairs secured wins of 6-0. This was a sight to behold, as even the claimed victories were marked by precision and teamwork.
The singles matches echoed the dominance established in doubles. Maria Rizzolo was impressive, winning her match 6-0, 6-3 against Doaa Mohamed. Meanwhile, Alessia Tagliente, Athina Pitta, and Chiara Di Genova followed suit, delivering typically strong performances. The final match ended on a high note as Ava Rath shut out her opponent 6-0, 6-2.
Head coach Chris Hooshyar lauded his players for their emotional intelligence and resiliency.
