On February 9, 2025, the Mississippi State men’s tennis team, currently ranked No. 13, put on an incredible display of skill and teamwork. They wrapped up their non-conference schedule with not one, but two emphatic 7-0 shutouts against Memphis and Jackson State. Tennis fans in Starkville were treated to a thrilling afternoon at the Rula Tennis Pavilion followed by another exciting match at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.

Bulldogs Dominate Memphis

In the first match against Memphis, the Bulldogs turned the heat up from the start. The doubles matches saw Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez claim victory with a convincing score of 6-1 over Conor Gannon and Sam Reeve. Meanwhile, Niccolo Baroni and Mario Martinez Serrano were leading their match against Pablo Alemany Malea and Moritz Kudernatsch at 4-2 when the match was left unfinished. Dusan Milanovic and Michal Novansky secured a win by default with a 6-0 score against Luis Sandoval Carvalho and Alejandro Visozo.

Moving on to singles play, Jovanovic had a dramatic matchup against Gannon but prevailed with a final score of 4-6, 6-3, 1-0. Sanchez Martinez faced Alemany Malea, winning after a tough battle, 6-7(4), 6-1, 1-0. The rest of the team followed suit with impressive victories: Dusan Milanovic dominated Moritz Kudernatsch with 6-1, 7-6(7), Niccolo Baroni dispatched Sam Reeve 6-2, 6-1, Mario Martinez Serrano won over Sandoval Carvalho 6-3, 6-4, and Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes crushed Alejandro Visozo 6-1, 6-0. Jackson State Falls to the Bulldogs

Later that day, the Bulldogs faced off against Jackson State, where they maintained their winning momentum by once again shutting out their opponents with another 7-0 victory. The doubles matches kicked off similarly, with Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez again leading at 4-2 against Ching Chang Chiu and Maas Schotanus. Baroni and Martinez Serrano claimed a 6-1 victory over Federico Pickenstainer and Alejandro Pinilla, while Milanovic and Novansky snagged a win by forfeit.

The singles matches showcased the Bulldogs’ prowess once more. Jovanovic defeated Pinilla 6-1, 6-4, demonstrating his skills and determination. Bryan Hernandez Cortes continued the trend by overcoming Federico Pickenstainer 7-5, 6-1. Ferrer Guimaraes returned to the court to outshine Ching Chang Chiu with a score of 6-1, 6-1. Following suit, Radomir Tomic overpowered Maas Schotanus 6-0, 6-1, while Michal Novansky celebrated yet another impressive win against Fabrizo Fallas 6-0, 6-2. Lastly, Marshall Landry wrapped things up with victory by forfeit. A clean sweep with no points against them!
