STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State Bulldogs’ remarkable soccer season came to an end on November 24, 2024, as they were eliminated from the NCAA tournament after a 2-0 defeat against Notre Dame in the Sweet 16. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs made history this season, setting new records and solidifying their status as one of the top programs in the nation.
The 2024 campaign saw Mississippi State achieve milestones that many thought were beyond reach. The Bulldogs clinched their first-ever SEC Regular Season Championship with an impressive record of 10 wins and 0 losses in conference play, joining an elite group of only four teams in SEC history to accomplish this. With an overall record of 19 wins, 3 losses, and 0 draws, the team not only recorded the highest win total in the program’s history but also finished the regular season ranked among the top five teams in the nation.
Under the guidance of Head Coach James Armstrong, who became the program’s all-time winningest coach this year, Mississippi State showcased a formidable defense. The Bulldogs led the nation in both shutout percentage and goals-against average, limiting SEC opponents to just two goals throughout conference play. This defensive prowess was complemented by a dynamic offensive attack, making the Bulldogs a challenging contender in every match.
A significant aspect of the Bulldogs’ successful season was the strong connection forged with the Starkville community. The atmosphere at the MSU Soccer Field was electric, helping the team maintain a 16-match unbeaten streak, which included 14 consecutive victories dating back to the previous season. Throughout the year, the team’s matches attracted record crowds, culminating in eight consecutive top-10 crowds and four all-time attendance records. The Sweet 16 match drew the second-largest crowd in program history, with 3,772 fans in attendance, showcasing the fervent support from the Maroon and White faithful.
This historic season went beyond the record-breaking achievements; it was about fostering pride and unity within the community. Families, students, and local supporters rallied behind the Bulldogs, making every game a celebration of soccer and local spirit. The team’s success garnered national recognition for Starkville, and the cherished moments of the season were shared with a growing fan base that contributed significantly to the Bulldogs’ journey.
Though the 2024 season has come to a close, the legacy of this remarkable team is poised to live on. Mississippi State soccer has raised the bar for both athletic performance and community engagement. As the Bulldogs prepare for future seasons, the accomplishments of this year will serve as a springboard for ongoing development, ensuring the bond between Mississippi State and Starkville remains strong.
Reflecting on this extraordinary season, Coach James Armstrong shared, “Coaching is such a reward when you’re surrounded by incredible people. These girls put so much effort and hard work into what they do every day. It’s an honor to coach them. The big thing for our staff is that we get to prepare them for life. Soccer’s the bonus, but when you see them grow as individuals, it has a positive impact on everyone around them.”
As the Bulldogs look ahead, they carry with them the support and pride of a community that has become an integral part of their success.
