Starkville, Mississippi – As the campus buzzes with excitement, the Mississippi State Bulldogs are off to a fantastic start in the third year of head coach Sam Purcell’s tenure. With a current record of 3-0, the Bulldogs are showing off their skills on both ends of the court, dominating their early opponents, including Memphis, Alcorn State, and Alabama State, with an average score of 85-43. Talk about impressive!
While the Bulldogs have certainly made a splash, coach Purcell knows that the real tests lie ahead. Over the weekend, they will conclude a five-game homestand with matches against Chattanooga and Mercer. After this stretch of home cooking, the Bulldogs will hit the road for eight consecutive games, which means they’ll be away from the comfortable confines of Humphrey Coliseum for nearly a month. Exciting times are ahead, but can they maintain their form on the road?
This Sunday, Mississippi State will face the Chattanooga Mocs, a team that should not be taken lightly. Despite a rocky start to their season, standing at 2-2 after falling to Tennessee Tech and Troy, the Mocs have an impressive track record that includes a 28-5 record last season and a place in the NCAA Tournament. Purcell has a lot of respect for the Mocs, stating, “I want regional games. I want to build some energy and also play winning programs.”
Last season’s painful 59-53 defeat to Chattanooga lingers in the minds of the Bulldogs. Missing their two starting post players, Jessika Carter and Eryn Barnum, during that matchup was tough, but it was also a learning experience for the squad. Senior guard Debreasha Powe, who played for 31 minutes during that loss and scored only six points, has an intense motivation for this rematch. “Based off of last year, we know that they’re aggressive,” said Powe. “We’re excited. We lost to them last year, so we’re just excited to play them.”
The Mocs are under new management this year, with head coach Deandra Schirmer taking over after a stellar stint at Valdosta State. Her history of winning is impressive, boasting a 114-31 record over five seasons, including four NCAA Tournament appearances. This adds extra spice to the matchup. Purcell acknowledges the challenge, saying, “They’ve got some great kids that know how to play the game the right way, so this will hands down be the biggest challenge we’ve had all year.”
Already, coach Purcell’s team has put on some exciting performances, making the community proud. However, as they prepare to transition into a demanding schedule of away games, fans and players alike will be watching closely. Will they continue to showcase their dominance? Will the thrill of the court last beyond their homestead?
As the Bulldogs gear up for this intense weekend of basketball, there’s no doubt that they are ready to bring their A-game. Whether they’re battling on the court or overcoming past defeats, this team is on a mission. With Purcell leading the charge, there are plenty of reasons for Bulldogs fans to be optimistic as the season unfolds!
