Sponsor Our ArticlesIn a dramatic showdown at the Astros Foundation College Classic, the No. 18 Mississippi State Bulldogs narrowly lost to the Oklahoma State Cowboys, 9-7. The Bulldogs initially took the lead, but Oklahoma State surged ahead with a strong offensive performance. Mississippi State fought back with a late rally, scoring five runs in the seventh inning but ultimately fell short. Despite the setback, the Bulldogs look to bounce back in their next game against Southern Miss.
In a thrilling finale at the Astros Foundation College Classic held in Houston, the No. 18 Mississippi State Bulldogs faced off against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, but unfortunately, the game ended in a close 9-7 loss for Mississippi State.
Sweet and sour notes filled the air at Minute Maid Park on March 2, 2025. With this loss, the Bulldogs’ record took a hit, falling to 7-4, while the Cowboys celebrated their victory, improving their record to 6-4.
Both teams put on a show, each racking up 9 hits during the game, which demonstrated just how competitive this matchup was. The Bulldogs were off to a strong start when Bryce Chance launched a solo home run in the top of the first inning, sending the MSU bench into a frenzy and setting the score at 1-0. But Oklahoma State quickly evened things up when Garrett Shull crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 1-1 by the end of the first inning.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the momentum was short-lived as Oklahoma State made a strong push in the bottom of the third inning. The Cowboys piled on multiple runs during that critical inning, swinging the momentum in their favor with a commanding 6-1 lead. That chunk of scoring proved to be vital in determining the game’s outcome.
But Mississippi State didn’t back down. Their Reed Stallman had a standout performance, going 3-for-4 with not one, but two home runs, and bringing in four RBIs. He first blasted one out of the park in the fourth inning, cutting Oklahoma State’s lead to 6-2. The energy at the park started to shift as it became clear that the Bulldogs were not finished yet.
As the game progressed, Oklahoma State stretched their lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the sixth with a jaw-dropping three-run homer from Nolan Schubart. It seemed like all hope was lost for Mississippi State, but this team has a knack for comebacks!
The seventh inning was nothing short of electric for the Bulldogs. They stormed back with an impressive offensive display, scoring five runs and narrowing the gap significantly, with contributions from Reese, Noah Sullivan (who finished with a solid 2-for-4 day), and again Stallman, making the score 9-7. It was a thrilling moment that had Bulldog fans on their feet!
This heartbreaker required a concerted effort from the MSU pitching staff who used five pitchers throughout the game. Starting pitcher Stone Simmons took the loss, moving his season record to 2-1 after this challenging outing. On a brighter note, both Kevin Mannell and the impressive Luke Dotson pitched brilliantly in relief, combining to throw 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball. Mannell made his debut on the mound, not only holding the Cowboys scoreless but also striking out one batter and giving fans something to cheer about.
Though this game didn’t end the way Mississippi State hoped, the team is gearing up for their next challenge! They will be hosting Southern Miss on March 4, 2025, at 4 p.m. at their home base. For fans unable to attend, the game will be available for viewing on SEC Network+, bringing the action right to your living room.
