Mississippi National Guard Ready and Deployed for Hurricane Response
MERIDIAN, Miss. – As storms threaten coastal communities, the spirit of unity and readiness shines bright in the Mississippi National Guard. Recently, around 31 dedicated Soldiers and Airmen took to the skies and roads, headed for South Carolina and Florida to assist in recovery efforts following the catastrophic impacts of Hurricane Helene.
With the arrival of Hurricane Helene, which was deemed a highly dangerous storm, the Mississippi National Guard was quick to answer the call for help. An Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) request was approved to provide crucial support during this challenging time. “We’ll do whatever we can to assist our fellow Americans in their time of need,” expressed a state leader, urging everyone to keep those affected in their thoughts and prayers.
The Mission at Hand
Major General Bobby M. Ginn Jr., the adjutant general of the Mississippi National Guard, explained how critical it is for service members to be prepared for emergency situations. “Our Soldiers and Airmen are always training not just for military readiness but also for emergency response missions,” he noted. The Mississippi National Guard’s efforts involve a mix of resources and skills aimed to support communities during natural disasters.
One significant contingent of the Mississippi Army National Guard, specifically the 185th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade based in Jackson, prepared for an active deployment to Tallahassee, Florida, to bolster relief operations in areas hit hard by the hurricane. The aviation team, made up of 18 soldiers, aviators, and crew members, took with them two UH-60 Blackhawks and one CH-47 Chinook helicopter.
These brave men and women undertook approximately 20 hours of flight time, facilitating the transportation of vital search and rescue teams to the most affected regions, including Tampa, just one day after the storm’s impact. They completed their mission in Florida and returned home safely, proving their commitment to service.
Supporting Local Communities
Another group made up of 13 Airmen from the Meridian-based Civil Engineer Squadron, 186th Air Refueling Wing, deployed to assist in Hurricane Helene’s aftermath. Their essential mission focused on debris removal in difficult-to-reach locations, enabling first responders to access areas in need of immediate assistance.
Colonel Jeremy Parker, the director of military support for the Mississippi National Guard, shared insights on the team’s rapid mobilization efforts. “With less than 36 hours’ notice, the 186th Civil Engineering Squadron has rapidly mobilized and deployed a debris clearance team to Greenville, South Carolina, to assist emergency management officials,” he explained.
The Spirit of Service
The dedicated members of the 186th Civil Engineer Squadron specialize in all things construction and are equipped to tackle various tasks, including utilities and infrastructure projects. Colonel Cynthia Smith, commander of the 186th Air Refueling Wing, praised her team, stating, “Our part-time Airmen didn’t hesitate to volunteer alongside other Guardsmen for this important recovery effort. We are proud to serve both our community and country when called upon.”

The National Weather Service continues to alert communities about potential hazards, underlining the necessity of preparedness.
