Mississippi National Guard Rises to the Challenge Amid Hurricane Helene
Approximately 31 Soldiers and Airmen of the Mississippi National Guard have stepped up to provide critical support in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Their deployment to areas in South Carolina and Florida comes as a response to a request for assistance through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC).
With the storm wreaking havoc across states, there is a resilient spirit as the National Guard members are always ready to answer the call.
Ready, Trained, and Equipped
The Mississippi National Guard is unique in its ability to juggle dual responsibilities – one foot firmly planted in military readiness and the other deeply engaged in emergency response. There is an emphasis on the constant state of preparedness among the Guardsmen, who are always training for emergency response missions along with their military readiness training.
In a noteworthy operation, members of the Mississippi Army National Guard’s 185th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade were deployed to Tallahassee, Florida, where they prepared for a series of crucial relief operations following the havoc unleashed by Hurricane Helene. This dedicated aviation response team was comprised of 18 soldiers, aviators, and crewmen, who utilized two UH-60 Blackhawks and one CH-47 Chinook helicopter to transport search and rescue teams to hard-hit regions.
In just one day, their efforts were focused around Tampa, where they logged approximately 20 hours in the air, facilitating access for rescuers to the most affected areas. After successfully carrying out their mission, these courageous aviators returned home safely.
Ground Efforts in Full Swing
The support didn’t stop in Florida; shortly after, 13 airmen from the Meridian-based Civil Engineer Squadron, 186th Air Refueling Wing, swiftly mobilized to offer additional assistance. Their mission was to clear debris from difficult-to-reach areas, a vital task that would help first responders gain access to those trapped or in distress due to the storm’s aftermath.
The Mississippi National Guard received a request for assistance from the South Carolina Emergency Management Division to assist with the clearing of debris from roadways throughout the northwestern area of the state. With less than 36 hours’ notification, the 186th Civil Engineering Squadron rapidly mobilized to assist emergency management officials.
The 186th squad is well-versed in tackling complex infrastructure and construction tasks, making them particularly effective for this mission. The eagerness of airmen to step forward during this critical recovery effort illustrates their commitment to serving both community and country when called upon.
