Detroit Billionaire Massad Boulos Joins Trump Administration as Senior White House Adviser for Arab and Middle Eastern Affairs

Detroit Sees Major Political Appointment as Massad Boulos Joins Trump Administration

Detroit, Michigan – In a significant development for U.S. politics, President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Massad Boulos, a billionaire businessman and the father-in-law of Trump’s daughter Tiffany, as a senior White House adviser for Arab and Middle Eastern affairs. This announcement, made on Sunday, comes as Trump’s administration is beginning to take shape, particularly regarding its approach to the Middle East.

Boulos played a crucial role in the Trump campaign’s outreach to Arab Americans, a position that seems to have brought him closer to Trump’s circle. The specifics of his role are still largely unclear, but his appointment is seen as a strategic move given the tensions in the region, particularly concerning Israel and its neighbors.

Trump’s Praise for Boulos

President-elect Trump expressed high regard for Boulos in a statement on his Truth Social platform, calling him an “accomplished lawyer and a highly respected leader in the business world.” He emphasized Boulos’s experience, stating that he is “a dealmaker, and an unwavering supporter of PEACE in the Middle East.” Trump added that he is excited to have Boulos on his team to advocate for the United States and its interests.

Boulos is not without political connections; he is a key figure in the Arab American community, particularly amid ongoing tensions regarding U.S. support for Israel during the Gaza conflict. Many Arab Americans are looking for a shift away from President Joe Biden’s policies, which they believe have been too favorable to Israel.

A Challenging Balancing Act

During the Trump campaign, Boulos aimed to tap into the frustrations within the Arab American community over Biden’s continued support for Israeli policies. Trump has made some bold claims about wanting to mend U.S.-Middle Eastern relations, although his past actions might suggest otherwise. While Trump had promised to end the war in Gaza, he was also known for his strong ties with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In his first term from 2017 to 2021, Trump made several controversial decisions regarding Israel. He relocated the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, recognized Israeli control over the Golan Heights, and facilitated a series of agreements to normalize relations between Israel and various Arab nations. His nomination of Mike Huckabee as ambassador to Israel has suggested that there may be a continuation of this same supportive approach towards Israel in his upcoming term.

Mixed Reactions from the Arab American Community

The reaction to Boulos’s appointment within the Arab American community has been mixed. Some welcomed the decision and identified with Trump’s socially conservative message, while others were not convinced that Boulos could offer a different path for U.S. policy in the Middle East than Biden.

In Dearborn, Michigan, a city with a substantial Arab American population, there has been a notable shift in political allegiances. During the recent presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris received only half the votes that Biden had secured in 2020, while Trump garnered over 42 percent. This marked a significant departure from traditional Democratic support among Arab Americans.

Boulos’s Background and Political Connections

Massad Boulos was born into a politically connected Christian family in Lebanon before moving to Texas as a teenager to join his family’s business ventures, which have primarily been in Nigeria. Despite earlier reports suggesting he ran for the Lebanese parliament in 2009, Boulos has denied this during recent interviews. He also stated that he does not have strong ties with any specific political party in Lebanon, although he is familiar with many Lebanese Christian leaders.

As a businessman and a long-time Republican, Boulos has been involved in Trump’s orbit since his son Michael married Tiffany Trump. His selection comes on the heels of Trump’s announcement nominating Charles Kushner, Jared Kushner’s father, as the ambassador to France, indicating a broadening of relationships within Trump’s inner circle.

As the Trump administration prepares to address complex and sensitive Middle Eastern issues, the role of Boulos will likely be scrutinized as he navigates these challenging waters.
