Long Island Couple with Alleged Connections to Chinese Communist Party Under Arrest for Money Laundering and Other Serious Charges

Long Island Couple Arrested for Alleged Ties to Chinese Government

In a surprising turn of events on a Tuesday morning, Linda Sun, who previously served as a deputy chief of staff to New York Governor Katie Hochul, was arrested by the FBI at her home in Long Island. This arrest also included her husband, Chris Hu. The couple faces serious allegations, including acting as unregistered agents of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and money laundering.

Details of the Allegations

The indictment details a series of accusations against Sun, stating that she used her connections within the New York State government to promote the interests of the Chinese government. The charges claim that she blocked Taiwanese representatives from entering the governor’s office and manipulated the public statements of two unidentified politicians on issues significant to the CCP. In exchange for these actions, she reportedly received lucrative offers from China, including travel benefits, luxurious gifts, and even a job for a relative.

The couple’s indictment includes multiple charges: acting as unregistered agents of a foreign government, conspiracy to defraud the U.S., wire fraud, money laundering, making false statements, and immigration fraud. This last charge stemmed from unauthorized invitations sent from the New York State to Chinese officials for visits to the United States.

FBI Investigation and Arrest

Sun’s legal troubles were preceded by an FBI search of the couple’s Manhasset home back in July. The couple lives in a multi-million dollar home in a gated community called Stone Hill, which they purchased in 2021. According to the indictment, they bought the home using assets allegedly acquired from the CCP.

In addition to their residence, the couple is reported to have enjoyed other lavish purchases, including a $2.1 million condominium in Honolulu, Hawaii, and even a Ferrari. They also employed a chef who was reportedly connected to CCP officials. These luxury purchases stand in stark contrast to the serious nature of the charges they now face.

Response from Authorities

U.S. Attorney Breon Peace provided insight into the government’s stance, stating, “The illicit scheme enriched the defendant’s family to the tune of millions of dollars. Our Office will act decisively to prosecute those who serve as undisclosed agents of a foreign government.” He described how both Sun and Hu allegedly were working to further the interests of the Chinese government and the CCP.

Court Proceedings

During their first court appearance on Tuesday afternoon, both Linda Sun and Chris Hu pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. They were granted release under strict conditions. Sun is out on a $1.5 million bond, while Hu’s bond is set at $500,000. The couple is now required to limit their travel to only areas within New York City, Long Island, Maine, and New Hampshire and must refrain from any contact with Chinese governmental bodies.

Background and Employment History

Linda Sun, who is 41 years old, had a significant role in the Cuomo administration before her appointment as deputy chief of staff in Hochul’s office in September 2021. At the time of her appointment, she was noted as the highest-appointed Asian-American official in the governor’s administration. However, Hochul’s office confirmed that Sun was terminated from her position in March 2023, following the discovery of evidence of misconduct, which was immediately reported to law enforcement.

Future Court Dates

Sun and Hu are expected to make their next appearance in federal court on September 25. The unfolding case continues to attract attention due to its implications involving political corruption and foreign influence in local governance.
