Welcome to Starkville, where neighbors become friends, and community spirit thrives! In the heart of this vibrant Mississippi town lives the Havelin family, who have woven their experiences into the fabric of Starkville life. Meet the delightful Libbi Havelin, who has turned her love for hospitality and community into a way of life.
Libbi Havelin is a beacon of warmth and creativity. Originally from Ripley, this Mississippi State University graduate has spent nearly a decade making her home here. Armed with a degree in retail floristry, Libbi returned to her roots in Ripley to own a flower shop for ten years. Not only did she excel in floral design, but she also took on the role of Main Street director, making a difference in her community.
Her journey eventually led her back to Starkville, where she has been busy building a life with her husband, Daniel, and embracing everything this charming city has to offer. “We love all things Mississippi State and all things Starkville,” Libbi shares with a smile. “It’s the perfect place to raise our family and build a community.”
In her professional life, Libbi is the executive assistant for the National Strategic Planning and Analysis Research Center (NSPARC) at Mississippi State. This fascinating center focuses on data collection and analysis to support community development, education, and job retention across the state. It’s clear that even in her professional realm, Libbi’s approach is friendly and approachable.
Work isn’t the only highlight of Libbi’s life in Starkville! She and her family have a tradition that everyone in town looks forward to—and that’s their legendary Wednesday taco nights. What started as a simple idea to support homesick college students has blossomed into a weekly gathering that brings together friends, neighbors, and even newcomers to town. “It’s a night where no one has to think about dinner, and we all come together to relax and connect,” she explains. This tradition seems like the perfect recipe for forging bonds and creating memories!
During the holidays, Libbi’s home buzzes with energy, whether it’s a Christmas Eve gumbo party or a lively tailgate with friends. Her home is a sanctuary for family, where everyone feels welcome. Growing up as an only child, Libbi’s house was always filled with visitors, something she cherished and wanted for her own children. “Our house is a place where everyone feels welcome,” she says, perfectly capturing the essence of hospitality.
Libbi and Daniel’s creativity extends beyond their home life. As a landscape architect and Starkville’s city planner, Daniel shares Libbi’s passion for design and hospitality. Together, they adore exploring new places, with family trips to Disney World, Canada, and Key West standing out as some of their best adventures! This family believes in the importance of creating shared experiences.
Additionally, Libbi is actively involved in the community, serving on the Starkville Area Arts Council and chairing the Cotton District Arts Festival. Such roles highlight her unwavering commitment to weaving the arts into the local culture. The beauty of life in Starkville is a delightful blend of Southern charm and a vibrant university atmosphere.
With the Havelin family, it’s not just about living in Starkville; it’s about immersing themselves in all that the community has to offer. Their story reflects a commitment to nurturing relationships, creating joyful spaces, and celebrating every moment. Whether you’re a long-time resident or a newcomer, Libbi’s approach to life serves as a heartwarming reminder of the beauty in community and family.
