Firework display over city.

July 4th Celebrations Across the Golden Triangle

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress ratified the Declaration of Independence, marking a significant turning point in American history. Every year since, Americans have celebrated this momentous occasion. In 1870, Independence Day was officially recognized as a federal holiday. Celebrations usually involve gatherings, barbeques, picnics, concerts, parades, and of course, firework shows. The Golden Triangle region is no exception, with several public and private celebrations planned for the week.

Parade in Caledonia

On Thursday, a new parade celebrating Independence Day is due to take place in downtown Caledonia. The event, organised by Mike and Jackie Savage, begins at 10:30 am, with the parade lining up at the Church of Christ of Caledonia parking lot at 10 am before proceeding down Main Street to Academy Street. Entries of all sizes are welcome, but vehicles must be decorated in a patriotic manner. No registration is required.

Starkville Parks and Recreation Celebration

The Starkville Parks and Recreation will be holding two separate events in celebration of the Fourth of July. The Moncrief Pool will be open to the public from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Attendees will be offered sweet treats, including popsicles while supplies last. As the pool closes, the Cornerstone Park will come alive with food trucks, bounce houses, live music from DJ Brice Stubbs and a fireworks display at 9:00 pm. Event attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to watch the fireworks comfortably.

Fireworks Display in Macon and New Hope

Firework shows are set to light up the sky in Macon and New Hope on Saturday. The Jeffrey Simmons Community Fun Day and Fireworks will be hosted on the Noxubee Titans Field for its second year, an event that includes performances by musical artists, outdoor games, food vendors, inflatables and more. The event will also include giveaways of jerseys autographed by Jeffrey Simmons and an unveiling of the Noxubee Titans Youth Sports Program, catering to youths aged 5-12.

In New Hope, community group New Hope Strong is hosting a “Peace, Love and Freedom” worship and fireworks event at the New Hope Community Center from 5-9 pm. This event will feature performances from local church choirs and a session to appreciate and recognize the veterans in attendance. Other activities include food trucks, vendors, giveaways, bounce houses, inflatables, a dunking booth, a train, and more family-friendly activities. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and tents for shade.

Fireworks on the Water Event

However, it is worth noting that the Fireworks on the Water event will not take place in 2024. The Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau will be returning to its pre-COVID schedule, alternating the fireworks show and an air show from the Thunderbirds every year. Though this year’s Thunder Over Columbus air show is set for September 21-22, Fireworks on the Water will make its triumphant return in 2025.

To Conclude

The Fourth of July is a time for celebration, unity, and the remembrance of America’s independence. Whether you choose to participate in a local parade, attend a community event, or enjoy a fireworks display, there’s something available for everyone in the Golden Triangle. As you celebrate this significant day, remember what it represents—the freedom and independence that we often take for granted, but should always be grateful for. Happy Fourth of July!
