Starkville, Mississippi – The Mississippi State Bulldogs women’s soccer team is making history as they head into the NCAA Tournament for the first time as a No. 1 seed. They will host Southern University in the opening round on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 5:00 p.m. CT, at the MSU Soccer Field.
This year has been a groundbreaking season for the Bulldogs under the leadership of sixth-year head coach James Armstrong. They achieved a remarkable 10-0-0 record in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), claiming their first-ever SEC Regular Season Championship. This accomplishment places them among only four teams in SEC history to finish with a perfect conference record and marks a significant moment for the newly expanded 16-team league.
The Bulldogs enter the tournament boasting an impressive 17-2-0 overall record, with the nation’s best winning percentage at .895. Although their stellar 14-match unbeaten streak ended with a loss to South Carolina in the SEC Tournament semifinals, the team remains one of the most formidable squads in collegiate soccer.
Mississippi State is known for its balanced game, showcasing a powerful offense and a tight defense. They average nearly two goals per game while surrendering less than one goal every two matches. Their defense is anchored by the SEC Defender of the Year, Rylie Combs, who has played a crucial role in their strong performance, especially at home.
Graduate goalie Maddy Anderson has tallied 13 shutouts this season and has a stellar 0.43 goals-against average. Named the 2024 SEC Goalkeeper of the Year, her skill and leadership have been vital in high-pressure situations.
Southern University arrives in Starkville with its own impressive storyline. The Jaguars recently captured their first SWAC Championship, securing their inaugural NCAA Tournament berth under the guidance of head coach Jeremy Fontenot. They enter the matchup with a four-match winning streak, which includes a perfect run through the SWAC Tournament.
Forward Giftee Tor has led the Jaguars this season with four goals and an impressive .550 shots-on-goal percentage. In goal, Sydney Bellamy has been a reliable presence with a .813 save percentage and a 1.29 goals-against average.
The Bulldogs have established MSU Soccer Field as a daunting environment for visiting teams, remaining unbeaten in their last 14 home matches, including 12 consecutive victories dating back to 2023. This season, they hold a perfect 10-0 record at home and have yet to concede a goal in Starkville.
Under Armstrong’s leadership, Mississippi State has an outstanding record when scoring first (55-1-6) and is undefeated when leading at halftime (36-0-3), which emphasizes their strength early in matches.
This first-round matchup is momentous for both teams. For the Bulldogs, it is a chance to display their growth and aim for a national championship. For the Jaguars, it signifies a historic step as they make their debut on the NCAA Tournament stage following years of development.
Fans are encouraged to support the Bulldogs by attending the match and making the atmosphere electric at the MSU Soccer Field. Tickets are available now, and as the team embarks on its journey in the NCAA Tournament, the Starkville community looks forward to this exciting chapter in Mississippi State soccer history.
