Starkville, a city nestled in the heart of Mississippi, is home to some of the friendliest faces and warmest hearts, none of which stand out quite like the Havelin family. Lead by the effervescent Libbi Havelin, this family has made a name for themselves through their dedication to community, a love of hosting, and a passion for making every gathering special.
Libbi, a proud graduate of Mississippi State University and a native of Ripley, has spent nearly a decade crafting her ideal life in Starkville. After completing her degree in retail floristry, she returned to her hometown where she operated a flourishing flower shop for ten years. In the meantime, she stepped into the role of Main Street director, diving deep into community development.
But her heart eventually led her back to Starkville. Here, she rediscovered old friendships and created a new life with her husband, Daniel. “We love all things Mississippi State and all things Starkville,” Libbi shared with a cheerful smile, “It’s the perfect place to raise our family and build a community.”
These days, Libbi serves as the executive assistant for the National Strategic Planning and Analysis Research Center (NSPARC) at the university. The center focuses on vital aspects like data collection and analysis that propels community development and education forward across the state. However, when it comes to explaining her work, Libbi often finds herself chuckling. “When friends ask, I usually direct them to the website,” she said with laughter, showcasing her down-to-earth personality.
Outside the office, the Havelin family is known for their lively taco nights every Wednesday. What started as a small gathering to help homesick college students feel at home has blossomed into a delightful ritual that draws in friends, neighbors, and new faces. “It’s a night where no one has to think about dinner, and we all come together to relax and connect,” Libbi explained.
No gathering is too small for the Havelins. From festive Christmas Eve gumbo parties to vibrant tailgates, Libbi’s home continues to buzz with energy and warmth. Drawing from her upbringing as an only child in a house that welcomed visitors at all times, she made it her mission to cultivate the same sense of community for her children. “Our house is a place where everyone feels welcome,” she stressed, highlighting the importance of connection in her family.
Libbi isn’t alone in her love for hosting and design. Her husband, Daniel, is a landscape architect and the city planner for Starkville. Together, they share a kinship that allows them to explore new destinations while building a nurturing environment for their family. From exhilarating trips to Disney World to scenic adventures in Canada and Key West, their family travels are filled with joy and laughter.
The Havelins don’t just stop at their home; they are fully involved in the Starkville community. Libbi serves on the Starkville Area Arts Council and takes pride in her role as the chair of the Cotton District Arts Festival, pushing the creative boundaries of their beloved city. She describes their life in Starkville as a “perfect blend of Southern charm and vibrant university culture,” a lovely sentiment that resonates deeply within the community.
As the Havelin family continues to enrich the Starkville community with their warmth, creativity, and ties to tradition, it’s clear they are not just a family; they are a spirited part of what makes Starkville feel like home.
